There are some things even science can’t explain.<\/p>\n

Why does a brilliant Ph.D. candidate impulsively kiss the most intimidating professor on campus to convince her best friend she’s over another man? Why does said professor agree to continue pretending they’re dating? Why do two extraordinarily intelligent people fail to recognize what is increasingly obvious to everyone around them?<\/p>\n

Because love makes fools of us all.<\/p>\n

And in director Claire Scanlon’s utterly charming THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS, that’s precisely where the fun begins.<\/p>\n

Based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel and adapted for the screen by Sarah Rothschild, THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS stars Lili Reinhart as Olive, a doctoral candidate whose life is devoted to science, research and an academic future she has carefully plotted. But when Olive realizes her best friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) has feelings for Olive’s former crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), she decides she needs to convince Anh that she’s moved on.<\/p>\n

So Olive kisses the first man she sees.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately\u2014or perhaps very fortunately\u2014that man is Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), a professor with a fearsome reputation, an imposing demeanor and a personality that has earned him the nickname \u201cDr. Evil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thus begins an arrangement.<\/p>\n

There will be fake dating. There will be rules. There will be boundaries. There will be mutually beneficial reasons why continuing the charade makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n

And there will be two people increasingly incapable of recognizing that the only thing fake about their relationship is their insistence that it isn’t real.<\/p>\n

What makes THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS so irresistible is the sweetness beneath the conceit. Scanlon isn’t interested merely in maneuvering Olive and Adam through the required mechanics of a fake-dating romance. She allows a genuine friendship to develop between them first, and it’s that friendship that gives the eventual romance its heart.<\/p>\n

Reinhart and Bateman are off-the-charts together.<\/p>\n

Their chemistry is undeniable, but it’s the contrast in their performances that makes it sing. Reinhart gives Olive a wonderfully nuanced comedic physicality. A look, a hesitation, a shift of the eyes or an awkward gesture can tell us precisely what Olive is thinking long before she’s prepared to admit it aloud. Bateman wisely goes in the opposite direction. His Adam is so controlled and stoic that the smallest crack in the fa\u00e7ade becomes hilarious\u2014or unexpectedly touching.<\/p>\n

They are a beautifully mismatched match.<\/p>\n

And Scanlon understands something important: these aren’t stupid people behaving stupidly because the screenplay requires it. These are exceptionally smart people who become spectacularly irrational in matters of the heart.<\/p>\n

That’s not merely romantic comedy.<\/p>\n

That’s screwball comedy.<\/p>\n

The DNA of His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby<\/em> and The Philadelphia Story<\/em> may be dressed here in lab coats and contemporary academic trappings, but the fundamental comic principle remains gloriously intact: put intelligent people into increasingly awkward situations and watch intellect become utterly useless.<\/p>\n

A simple application of sunscreen becomes a wonderfully ridiculous piece of physical comedy.<\/p>\n

A college party comes complete with scientific hijinks involving a balloon-inflation experiment, because apparently even partying operates at a higher intellectual level when doctoral candidates are involved.<\/p>\n

Academia may elevate the college experience.<\/p>\n

The gamesmanship of love never matures.<\/p>\n

But Scanlon is doing something particularly lovely beneath all that froth, and cinematographer Matthew Clark is instrumental in achieving it.<\/p>\n

Visually, THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS is light, bright and inviting, but there’s an intelligence to the visual grammar that mirrors the developing relationship between Olive and Adam.<\/p>\n

Early on, Scanlon and Clark make wonderful use of two-shots and mid-shots. Olive and Adam may occupy the same frame, but there is space between them. As their fake relationship develops into friendship and friendship begins sliding toward something neither is prepared to acknowledge, that distance starts disappearing.<\/p>\n

The camera moves closer because they are moving closer.<\/p>\n

It’s subtle and beautifully effective.<\/p>\n

Adam’s early visual presentation is particularly regimented, with controlled compositions, pronounced headroom and a sense of order befitting the seemingly impenetrable Dr. Carlsen. But as emotional defenses begin falling, the compositions tighten. Headroom disappears. Close-ups become more prevalent.<\/p>\n

And Scanlon doesn’t squander the extreme close-up by using it indiscriminately. She and Clark save it for moments when intimacy matters.<\/p>\n

That visual progression reaches its romantic apex during the hotel sex scene. Shot with handheld camerawork and beautifully employed ECUs, the sequence is intimate, sensual and remarkably tasteful. Bodies aren’t photographed as disconnected pieces of anatomy. The camera is interested in faces, reactions, vulnerability and connection.<\/p>\n

By this point, the physical distance that once existed between Olive and Adam has essentially disappeared from both their relationship and the frame.<\/p>\n

The visual hypothesis has reached its conclusion.<\/p>\n

Editors Kim Boritz-Brehm and Tia Nolan are equally critical to making that progression work. The pacing is brisk without feeling rushed, allowing the sexual tension to accumulate while giving the underlying friendship sufficient time to become believable.<\/p>\n

Nothing gets bogged down. Nothing overstays its welcome.<\/p>\n

In fact, the greatest problem with Olive and Adam is that I wanted more of them.<\/p>\n

But THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS doesn’t live by its central couple alone.<\/p>\n

Rachel Marsh’s Anh is the kind of best friend everyone should be lucky enough to have. There’s an authenticity and ease to her friendship with Olive that immediately makes their history believable without requiring endless exposition to establish it.<\/p>\n

And then there’s Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm.<\/p>\n

Malcolm is essentially the little brother in the Olive-Anh-Malcolm triumvirate\u2014the one you love, occasionally want to strangle and sometimes forgive more quickly than you probably should.<\/p>\n

But importantly, he isn’t relegated to being the wisecracking best friend whose only purpose is servicing Olive’s story.<\/p>\n

Malcolm is messy.\u00a0\u00a0He slacks off. He screws up. He gets overwhelmed. He lashes out at his friends and projects his own problems onto them. He damages relationships and then has to take responsibility for repairing them.<\/p>\n

Young-White finds both the humor and vulnerability in those imperfections, giving Malcolm a life beyond the traditional rom-com sidelines.<\/p>\n

And that authenticity extends throughout the ensemble. These people feel like friends and colleagues rather than supporting characters periodically summoned because the plot needs someone for Olive to talk to.<\/p>\n

Even Laura Karpman’s score understands the particular world these characters inhabit.<\/p>\n

Light and frothy where it needs to be, Karpman’s music never reduces the material to generic rom-com sweetness. There’s intelligence and playfulness in the musical construction, including the ingenious incorporation of sounds made using test tubes and beakers\u2014science itself becoming part of the film’s musical vocabulary.<\/p>\n

And then there are the winks.<\/p>\n

Anyone familiar with the origins of Hazelwood’s novel as Rey\/Kylo Ren fan fiction should have particular fun listening closely when Adam enters the coffee shop or later confronts Tom Benton. Karpman’s playful echoes of John Williams and Darth Vader add another layer to the joke without requiring anyone unfamiliar with that history to understand it.<\/p>\n

That’s how an Easter egg should work. If you catch it, wonderful. If you don’t, the movie keeps moving.<\/p>\n

And THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS does keep moving.<\/p>\n

Scanlon has a keen sense of comic timing, but more importantly, she knows when not to chase the laugh. The funniest moments often emerge organically from character\u2014the sunscreen, Olive’s increasingly desperate attempts to maintain the fiction she’s created, Adam’s implacable reactions to the chaos surrounding him.<\/p>\n

That restraint is important because there is genuine emotional material here as well. When the story takes a serious turn involving Olive’s experience with Tom Benton, Scanlon doesn’t allow the tonal buoyancy surrounding it to diminish the gravity of what has happened. The visual language changes. The comedy steps aside. Olive’s perspective remains paramount.<\/p>\n

That tonal confidence is one of the film’s greatest strengths.<\/p>\n

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS knows exactly what kind of movie it is without ever treating that kind of movie as something lesser.<\/p>\n

It’s romantic.<\/p>\n

It’s funny.<\/p>\n

It’s unabashedly sweet.<\/p>\n

It’s populated by intelligent adults doing serious work who nevertheless become complete idiots when their hearts get involved.<\/p>\n

And beneath the romantic froth is some very smart filmmaking.<\/p>\n
