But what happens when that love becomes so consumed with saving the child that it crosses the line into control? When the desire to protect becomes an obsession? And when the person doing the saving cannot recognize that his own behavior may be part of a destructive cycle?

These are among the provocative questions at the heart of writer/director Jake Allyn’s CLEAN HANDS, a powerful, often emotionally wrenching drama inspired by the true story of Maryland narcotics officer Kevin Simmers, his 19-year-old daughter Brooke, and her battle with opioid addiction. Anchored by a stunning performance from Esther McGregor as Brooke and showcasing Allyn’s continued growth as a filmmaker, CLEAN HANDS is a story full of humanity, heartbreak, and hope. Unfortunately, it is also a film whose central character, as written and performed, proves increasingly difficult to embrace.

Zach Braff stars as Kevin Simmers, a veteran narcotics officer who has dedicated his professional life to getting drugs and dealers off the streets. At home, however, the battle is painfully personal. His daughter Brooke is struggling with addiction, and Kevin is determined to save her, seemingly by sheer force of will.

But Brooke’s addiction is not a criminal investigation Kevin can solve through interrogation, intimidation, or sheer persistence. And therein lies the film’s most compelling conflict.

From the outset, Kevin approaches his daughter’s recovery with the same aggressive determination he brings to his police work. He pushes. He demands. He insists. He wants Brooke to get clean for him, for the family, for the life he believes she should have. Yet in his desperation to save her, he repeatedly fails to recognize that recovery cannot be dictated by someone else.

Allyn draws an unmistakable parallel between father and daughter. Brooke is addicted to drugs. Kevin, in his own way, is addicted to the pursuit of eliminating them. Both are trapped in cycles of behavior that threaten to consume them.

It’s a fascinating premise, and one that offers tremendous dramatic potential.

Unfortunately, Braff’s portrayal of Kevin becomes so relentlessly controlling, obsessive, and confrontational that the character grows increasingly unlikeable. There is precious little vulnerability or self-reflection to counterbalance the anger, the demands, and the need to impose his will. While the desperation of a father watching his daughter slip away is understandable, the performance rarely gives us the emotional access necessary to connect with Kevin beyond that desperation.

By contrast, Esther McGregor is extraordinary as Brooke.

There is nothing romanticized or prettified about her performance. McGregor embraces the physical degradation, emotional instability, fear, and desperation of addiction with an authenticity that is at times difficult to watch. Whether struggling through withdrawal, navigating the indignities of incarceration, or attempting to reconnect with her family, she never allows Brooke to become merely a collection of symptoms or a cautionary tale.

There is a young woman beneath the addiction, someone with hopes, friendships, a sense of humor, and a desire for a future. McGregor makes certain we never lose sight of her.

Allyn and cinematographer Keith J. Leman complement that performance with a visual approach rooted in restraint. Rather than resorting to familiar cinematic shorthand for drug use—distorted imagery, exaggerated lighting, or stylized disorientation—the camera frequently observes without interference, allowing the physical and emotional realities of Brooke’s condition to speak for themselves.

Extreme close-ups become especially effective, bringing us uncomfortably near Brooke’s suffering while also emphasizing Kevin’s obsessive scrutiny of the world around him. The visual language establishes a connection between father and daughter without needing to announce it through dialogue.

There is also an impressive sense of place. Although much of the film was shot in Georgia, the production convincingly evokes Hagerstown, Maryland, aided by carefully considered locations, foliage, and atmospheric nighttime photography. The environments feel lived in rather than manufactured, reinforcing the film’s commitment to authenticity.

Editor Owen Jackson faces the considerable challenge of navigating a story that unfolds across roughly two years, shifting between Kevin’s perspective and Brooke’s experiences. At times we remain with Kevin, uncertain of where Brooke is or what has happened to her. At others, we accompany Brooke into the very circumstances from which her father is absent. It’s an effective narrative approach that allows us to experience both the desperation of a parent and the often unseen struggles of a daughter battling addiction.

But the film is not without its editorial and structural stumbles. Pacing occasionally falters, and some transitions lack the fluidity necessary to sustain the emotional momentum. More significantly, the screenplay waits too long to bring Brooke’s House into the narrative equation. Given that Kevin’s promise to build a home for Brooke and her friends is such an important emotional thread, earlier development of that promise and its importance to Brooke would have provided a stronger dramatic throughline.

Nevertheless, Jackson delivers moments of impressive visual storytelling. One particularly striking sequence involving Brooke’s movement through a prison yard and into her cell demonstrates how effectively camera placement and editing can convey isolation without excessive dialogue or visual ornamentation.

Yet for all the film’s craftsmanship, its supporting characters repeatedly illuminate shortcomings in Kevin’s characterization.

Abigail Spencer is criminally underused as Dana Simmers, Brooke’s mother and Kevin’s wife. Dana occupies a uniquely painful position within the family, witnessing both her daughter’s addiction and her husband’s increasingly compulsive attempts to control it.

In one particularly powerful scene, a young woman struggling with addiction arrives at the Simmers home seeking help. Kevin doesn’t want her inside. Dana thinks otherwise. She brings the girl into the house, takes her into the bathroom, and closes the door in Kevin’s face.

It’s a small gesture with enormous emotional resonance.

In that single action, Spencer conveys the compassion, humanity, and understanding that Kevin has struggled to demonstrate throughout the film. Dana recognizes a person in need rather than a problem to be removed. And the scene underscores just how much more the screenplay might have accomplished had she been afforded greater dramatic presence.

Equally intriguing is Lucas Till as Deputy Dormer, a young officer whose appearance immediately sets him apart from the established narcotics unit. Blond, youthful, and dressed in a tan uniform contrasting with the blue worn by the older, more diverse officers, Dormer registers as an outsider before he has said or done much of anything.

Till compounds that visual distinction with a shifty, unsettling quality that raises suspicions almost immediately.

Yet Kevin, despite his years of experience and his supposed ability to recognize criminal behavior, never seems to register the warning signs. Even when fellow officers question Dormer’s activities, Kevin continues to shepherd the young deputy.

Only when Dormer’s misconduct intersects with Brooke’s world does Kevin erupt, demanding punishment and eventually unleashing his fury during courtroom sentencing.

The irony is unmistakable. A man obsessed with identifying wrongdoing cannot recognize troubling behavior within his own ranks, yet becomes consumed with vengeance once the wrongdoing affects him personally.

Till brings a welcome ambiguity to the role, while the storyline again exposes the dangerous intersection of Kevin’s professional authority and personal obsession.

And that brings us to one of the film’s most emotionally significant elements: Brooke’s House.

Kevin promises Brooke that if she remains clean for a year, he will build a house for her and her friends. Brooke believes in that promise enough to share it with the women she meets while incarcerated.

But even this generous, loving promise is framed as a bargain. Stay clean, and the reward will follow.

Brooke’s House, a real recovery home for women in Hagerstown, Maryland, represents an extraordinary commitment to helping women struggling with addiction. Its mission and the lives it touches deserve admiration.

The film’s handling of Kevin’s emotional development, however, is another matter.

As Kevin pursues his goals, he continues to display the same confrontational, demanding behavior that has defined him throughout the story. His objectives may change, but the film offers little evidence that his understanding of addiction, recovery, or his own need for control has evolved alongside them.

Brooke’s House ultimately stands as the fulfillment of a father’s promise to his daughter, but the film leaves unanswered whether Kevin has learned anything about the difference between helping someone overcome addiction and attempting to control their recovery.

And therein lies the film’s central dramatic weakness.

Kevin Simmers ultimately changes the direction of his obsession, but neither the screenplay nor Braff’s performance convincingly demonstrates that he has changed the man behind it.

None of this negates the admirable work that inspired CLEAN HANDS or the sincerity with which Allyn approaches the material.

Indeed, one of the film’s greatest strengths is its connection to the real people whose experiences inform the story. Women in recovery, individuals associated with Brooke’s House, and law enforcement officers familiar with Kevin’s work contributed to the production, grounding the narrative in lived experience. Allyn’s determination to preserve that authenticity is evident throughout.

There is much to admire here, particularly in the performances of McGregor, Spencer, and Till, the thoughtful cinematography, and the strongest moments of editorial construction. There are also compelling glimpses of broader issues involving access to treatment, insurance obstacles, misconduct, and the difficult realities facing individuals seeking recovery. One wishes some of these threads had been given additional room to breathe.

For Allyn, whose earlier RIDE demonstrated considerable promise, CLEAN HANDS represents another meaningful step forward in his development as a storyteller. His willingness to tackle emotionally difficult material, trust his actors, and resist unnecessary visual embellishment speaks to an increasingly assured directorial sensibility.

Ultimately, CLEAN HANDS is both affecting and frustrating. Its compassion for those struggling with addiction is genuine, its depiction of Brooke’s suffering often devastating, and its commitment to the real-world mission of Brooke’s House admirable.

But a story about a father’s determination to save his daughter also demands an examination of the father himself.

And that is the examination CLEAN HANDS never quite completes.

Written and directed by Jake Allyn

Cast: Zach Braff, Esther McGregor, Abigail Spencer, Lucas Till

by debbie elias, 10/05/2026

CLEAN HANDS is in theatres and On Demand on October 16th.

Ultimately, CLEAN HANDS is both affecting and frustrating.
