A veteran stuntman, stunt coordinator, and second-unit director, Vanselow has spent years helping bring some of cinema’s most demanding action sequences to the screen. Among his many accomplishments is serving as Liam Neeson’s stunt double, building a professional relationship with the actor that has continued across multiple films. And through it all, Vanselow has understood that the most thrilling action is grounded in character, consequence, and story.

Now, with THE MONGOOSE, Vanselow steps into the feature director’s chair for the first time, this time directing the very actor for whom he once performed stunts. Starring Neeson alongside Marisa Tomei, Ving Rhames, Michael Chiklis, Marcus Thomas, and Maurice Meredith, THE MONGOOSE brings together Vanselow’s decades of practical filmmaking experience with an emotionally layered story. And while there are car chases, helicopters, spectacular practical stunts, and enough kinetic energy to satisfy the most demanding action aficionado, what makes THE MONGOOSE especially compelling is the emotional story beneath the spectacle.

Accused of a crime he didn’t commit, decorated war veteran Ryan “Fang” Flanagan (Neeson) becomes the subject of an extraordinary cross-country pursuit. With law enforcement closing in, old comrades rallying to his side, and an increasingly sympathetic public following his every move, Fang’s journey becomes more than a race to escape capture. It is also a story about service, loyalty, trauma, and the bonds forged between those who have gone to war together.

For Vanselow, who has worked with Neeson on multiple productions and collaborated with cinematographer Tom Stern on films including THE ICE ROAD and ICE ROAD: VENGEANCE, THE MONGOOSE offered the opportunity to unite the practical action filmmaking he knows so well with a story that demanded equal attention to its characters.

As Vanselow explained during our exclusive conversation, the project came together through producers Bart Rosenblatt and Alan Corley at Code Entertainment and screenwriter Thompson Evans.
“It’s music to my ears that you think all that’s connecting like that because that was the goal, right? We’ve been working together for years in different capacities, you know, with different people, and we all talk about, hey, wouldn’t it be great to have a movie that has those things in it?

“Luckily, I’ve done a few movies with Liam, and I have also done a few movies with Bart and Al from Code Entertainment, and they gave me the shot. They had the script. We had talked about a lot of different opportunities and different scripts that were kind of moving around, and that was something that they had and they proposed it.

“I got to work with Thompson Evans, the writer, and he was flexible. We all worked together based on the constraints of budget and location and time, and he was amazing and was able to adapt, which is difficult, right? Because you have something you’ve been carrying around for years, and then all of a sudden somebody else comes along and says, ‘Well, what about this? And what about that?’ He was just amazing in the flexibility and speed of being able to adapt everything.”

That flexibility proved essential. With a production schedule of just 35 days in Australia, an ambitious assortment of practical action sequences, and a story moving between a contemporary American pursuit and memories of Afghanistan, every creative decision needed to serve the larger vision.

But Vanselow is quick to emphasize that he was not working alone.

“I had a lot of support from Bart and Al, producing-wise, because obviously there’s a price that’s associated with all those different choices, and it was a constant movement. I think everybody was pulling on the same rope, which is really amazing, and that’s one of the things we all worked really hard on in the beginning.

“I’ve been on projects through the years where that’s not happening, and it just makes it really difficult. We were trying to be as clear as we could with the vision throughout, and everybody just really stepped up. All the department heads and every team. It was just surprises all the time that were positive and pushing the story forward in the way that we wanted.”

BUILDING THE VISUAL LANGUAGE

From its opening moments, THE MONGOOSE announces that it will be something more than a conventional pursuit thriller.

Calm ocean imagery, the gentle movement of waves, and Neeson’s distinctive voice reciting poetry establish an almost meditative atmosphere. Extreme close-ups invite contemplation. Then, without warning, editor Rodrigo Balart sends the film hurtling into motion as Fang races along in a Shelby Cobra, police vehicles converging around him and a spike strip threatening to bring his escape to an abrupt end.

It is a striking juxtaposition, one that establishes both the film’s kinetic momentum and the contrast between Fang’s internal world and the chaos surrounding him. Central to that approach was Vanselow’s collaboration with cinematographer Tom Stern.

When Stern’s name came up during our conversation, Vanselow couldn’t resist a little mischief. “Tom? Tom who?” he asked innocently. “Is he in the business?” After allowing a moment of thoroughly undeserved confusion, Vanselow laughingly confessed that he was joking. The affection behind the teasing was unmistakable. “He’s amazing, and we’ve done a few projects together, and luckily he signed on to shepherd me through the woods. Just an amazing talent and an amazing human being.”

Their professional relationship had already provided a strong foundation for the visual approach Vanselow wanted to pursue. “We’ve spent a lot of time, me as second-unit director and him as DP, just talking. So we spent a lot of time, once this was a real thing, about what we wanted to do. It was pretty clear.

“Sadly for him, he had to ride in the car with me every single day from the hotel to set, and so he got to hear my wild, outlandish ideas that I came up with in the middle of the night. Then he would figure out how to make those a reality and school me along the way.

“The proof is in the visuals with everything he does, and he’s just a pleasure to work with, and so fast. The actors just adore that because they can get their work done in an expeditious manner, and we can move and pivot depending on what the needs are for the film.”

That visual planning becomes especially important in the film’s Afghanistan sequences.

Rather than resorting to the familiar bleached-out desert imagery or sepia-toned flashbacks often associated with wartime memories, Vanselow and Stern developed a distinctive color palette that allows the past to remain emotionally present. These sequences are not simply explanatory detours. Through framing, color, and carefully selected close-ups, they become an extension of Fang’s psychological experience.

For Vanselow, avoiding familiar visual shorthand was a conscious creative decision.

“There’s a lot of layers there to go searching for, of those reasons. One of those is that we’ve all become a little bit immune to the stark-lighting, hot world of that. We’ve seen it in so many films, and it’s like everything else. There’s so many other experiences that people have dealt with over there, and we’re just trying to address it on that level so that it’s not what we’re just consistently hit with.

“You kind of tune out a little bit when you see the same kind of thing, and this hopefully engages people to think about it in a different way.”

MORE THAN THE CHASE

For all its formidable action credentials, THE MONGOOSE draws much of its emotional weight from its portrayal of military veterans and the lasting effects of war.

As Fang’s pursuit becomes a national spectacle, other veterans follow his journey, recognizing in his predicament something that goes beyond the immediate circumstances of his flight. Their reactions, often conveyed through faces and carefully composed shots rather than exposition, lend the story an additional dimension. This aspect of the film carries personal significance for Vanselow.

“I think it’s critical. I have relatives that have served. My nephews serve, my father, my grandfather, kind of thing. And I’ve had the luxury to be able to work with a lot of people that come to the stunt world from the military. What we want to do is talk about the action component and how we get people in the seats, and then let that be revealed for the audience. Because I think that’s the special sauce, that you’re surprised when you see it. I think that’s the takeaway of the layers of what we’re trying to get to in this film.”

That philosophy extends to the performances.

Neeson anchors the film with the combination of physical determination and emotional vulnerability that has made him such an enduring action star. Tomei brings warmth and complexity to her scenes with him, while Rhames, Chiklis, Thomas, and Meredith contribute to the film’s intersecting worlds of loyalty, authority, and moral judgment.

Vanselow credits both his actors and the casting team for helping create an ensemble capable of delivering the story under a demanding production schedule.

“All those actors, and Marcus Thomas is amazing, and Maurice Meredith was awesome. You can just point the camera in their direction and sit and watch. They’re all class acts, and it makes my job much easier. We all got together at various times to talk about the vision and what we’re trying to achieve, and then they were amazing after flying halfway across the planet to jump into this movie. Can’t say enough about the acting department.”

PRACTICAL ACTION AT FULL THROTTLE

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Mark Vanselow film without extraordinary practical action. And THE MONGOOSE delivers in spades.

From the opening pursuit in Fang’s Shelby Cobra to intricate vehicle maneuvers, aerial photography, and a breathtaking third-act car-to-helicopter transfer, Vanselow unleashes a succession of practical action sequences that are as technically impressive as they are narratively purposeful. Nothing feels arbitrarily inserted merely to provide another explosion of adrenaline. Each sequence builds upon the last, escalating the stakes while propelling Fang’s journey forward.

Working alongside Vanselow to bring these ambitious sequences to life was Chris Weir, serving as both stunt coordinator and second-unit director. Given Vanselow’s own extensive experience in both disciplines, the collaboration was rooted in an understanding of the precision, planning, safety, and execution necessary to accomplish practical action of this magnitude.

And then there are the helicopters.

For the extensive aerial work, Vanselow enlisted one of the industry’s most accomplished helicopter pilots and aerial coordinators, Craig Hosking, whose expertise proved invaluable in realizing some of the film’s most astonishing moments.

Vanselow was especially enthusiastic about recognizing Hosking’s contribution. “I can’t say enough about Craig Hosking, who was our aerial coordinator. Just a world apart. I’ve spent a few minutes dangling underneath his helicopter over the years in precarious situations, and he flew all the way out there in between when he was shooting THE ODYSSEY and came out and did some magic for us. I just can’t say enough about him and his skills and professionalism and safety. It’s just amazing…I think he was there for a week and just got some amazing footage for us. Shot all the aerial stuff for us and did a bunch of the action up there. The whole Australian team was in awe, and I can’t say enough about him.”

The aerial work becomes particularly spectacular in the film’s third act, with a practical car-to-helicopter transfer that ranks among its most jaw-dropping achievements. The choreography, timing, vehicle positioning, and coordination between ground and air create an extraordinary piece of action filmmaking. The sequence is not merely a showcase for technical prowess; it is a culmination of the film’s escalating pursuit, demanding that every element work in concert.

Equally impressive is the specialized camera and vehicle work that allows audiences to remain close to Fang throughout the chase. Among the production’s most ingenious techniques was the use of vehicle-mounted driving pods, with a professional stunt driver operating the vehicle from a specially rigged position while the camera captures Neeson in the driver’s seat. The arrangement allows for the immediacy and authenticity of a moving car without requiring the actor to perform every hazardous maneuver himself.

For Vanselow, the people responsible for executing these sequences deserve recognition every bit as much as those appearing on screen.

“The two drivers for Liam, again, shout-out. I just love to give out names. All too often the different department people don’t get named. Eugene and Gavin were our two drivers, and Eugene did most of the pod driving. Again, two rock stars.”

The effectiveness of the pods is particularly striking because the technique allows the action to remain visually connected to Neeson’s performance. Rather than sacrificing the actor’s expressions and reactions for exterior shots of speeding vehicles, Vanselow and his team maintain the relationship between character and physical jeopardy, reinforcing the emotional stakes even as the pursuit becomes increasingly elaborate.

All of this was accomplished during a remarkably compressed production schedule. Filming in Australia, the team completed THE MONGOOSE in just 35 days, working within the country’s 10-hour production days. As Vanselow recalled, “We crammed a lot in in 35 days, especially second unit. So again, high five to those guys.”

That achievement speaks not only to the technical expertise of the stunt and aerial teams but also to the collaborative efficiency of a production in which every department understood the vision. For Vanselow, the years spent coordinating stunts and directing second-unit action provided the foundation. But with THE MONGOOSE, those skills are now part of a larger responsibility, ensuring that every extraordinary piece of practical filmmaking remains connected to the characters, the story, and the emotional experience of the audience.

FINDING THE FILM IN THE EDIT

If the practical action provides THE MONGOOSE with its momentum, editor Rodrigo Balart gives that momentum its rhythm.

The film moves rapidly between the pursuit, the characters responding to it, and Fang’s memories of Afghanistan. Flashbacks, superimpositions, extreme close-ups, and carefully timed transitions allow past and present to coexist without sacrificing the urgency of the chase.

For Vanselow, finding the right editor was as much about a shared creative language as technical expertise. “It’s one of those things you don’t know meeting somebody whether or not you connect. And I think we just connected early on. I expressed to him my vision and the different dimensions I was trying to search for in it, and he picked it up right away. Some of the first assemblies that he did, I intentionally didn’t tell him anything on the first couple edits, and he just nailed it. It was great because then it was obvious that we were both speaking the same language.”

The two collaborated across considerable distance, with Vanselow in Los Angeles and Balart editing in Melbourne. That arrangement proved remarkably productive.

“As the assemblies would come through, and to do that on a film like this where you have such a short period of time and you’re moving around so dynamically, it’s really important because I was able to show those to the camera team and everybody that was working so hard. It just invigorates everybody because you see it come together. When you’re working in the middle of nowhere and you think, well, how is this going to look like this place, and then the edit gets strung together, it was just amazing. We had a great first assembly, and then we spent our time getting it to where we wanted, and constantly massaged it to the bitter end. He’s phenomenal.”

Composer Michael Yezerski also played an important role in shaping the film’s emotional and musical identity, contributing not only the score but original songs. Vanselow was equally enthusiastic about that collaboration.

“He wrote some of the songs, some original songs for that on top of the music, and created the mood that we need throughout on so many levels. He just went through the blender to get there and stayed on target the whole time and knocked it out of the park. Again, another champion.”

THE ENDURANCE OF A DIRECTOR

For someone who has spent decades working in the demanding worlds of stunts and second-unit filmmaking, stepping into the feature director’s chair might appear to be a natural progression. But for Mark Vanselow, directing THE MONGOOSE brought a new understanding of what it means to shepherd an entire film from its earliest creative stages through the final decisions in post-production.

Having watched Vanselow’s work evolve over the years, I wanted to know what this experience had taught him, not about staging action or coordinating stunts, but about himself as a storyteller and filmmaker. What had he learned sitting in the director’s chair that he could carry forward into future films? His response was thoughtful, candid, and revealing.

“I think what I learned, you kind of understand it until you’re there. But we’ve spent a lot of time in the stunt community in pre-production and production, and very little time in post-production. And I think what I learned in this effort was the endurance that it takes to stay for those three segments of the process, and to continue to hold on to that vision and let everybody else do their best work and add to that vision, but you still have to hold on to that throughout. And it’s not so much fight. You hear that a lot where you’re fighting, but every day is a creative choice, budgetary or whatever. There’s a famous quote that I’m going to steal from a producer in Australia, and he said, ‘We make stuff up for a living, so we just make something else up today.'”

It’s a deceptively simple observation, but one that speaks volumes about Vanselow’s approach to filmmaking. The challenge isn’t simply making the right decisions during production. It’s maintaining the creative thread that connects those decisions, allowing collaborators to contribute their expertise while ensuring that the finished film remains true to its original purpose.

And for a filmmaker whose career has been built around practical action, the ability to adapt is more than a creative convenience. It’s also a matter of safety.

As Vanselow continued, “I think it’s a great term, especially from the stunt community, because there’s no reason to put somebody in jeopardy today because we’ll just make something else up. That’s constantly going on every single day. Once you get into the VFX and the music and everything else, everything is kind of, what are we making up today, and how does it serve that initial vision?”

That philosophy may be the most important lesson Vanselow carries forward from THE MONGOOSE. The director’s job is not to impose every decision but to recognize the best contributions of the people around him, adapt when circumstances demand it, and never lose sight of the story everyone has come together to tell.

As for whether THE MONGOOSE might eventually lead to another adventure for Fang Flanagan, Vanselow isn’t making promises. “We’ll see what happens. I think the mystery in those is always great. From a film-going community, I think we all like to look at those and go, maybe this could be something else. But everything has to be right.”

For now, THE MONGOOSE marks an exciting new chapter for a filmmaker who has spent much of his career helping other directors realize their visions.

With his feature debut, Mark Vanselow demonstrates that the knowledge acquired through decades of stunt work, second-unit direction, and collaboration can translate into something much greater than a collection of impressive action sequences.

It can become a complete cinematic experience in which the spectacle serves the story, the characters give the action meaning, and every department contributes to a singular vision.

And if THE MONGOOSE is any indication, Mark Vanselow has plenty more stories to tell.

by debbie elias, exclusive interview
