{"id":5853,"date":"2011-01-14T15:12:56","date_gmt":"2011-01-14T23:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=5853"},"modified":"2014-10-19T15:16:36","modified_gmt":"2014-10-19T22:16:36","slug":"burning-palms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/burning-palms\/","title":{"rendered":"BURNING PALMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5856\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp1-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"bp1\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp1-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp1.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I first met Chris Landon when he was a tow-headed young lad watching his dad at work.\u00a0 Dad just happened to be Michael Landon.\u00a0 I remember Chris as being a bit shy and having a grin to melt anyone\u2019s heart.\u00a0\u00a0 And you just knew the wheels were turning inside that little head of his.\u00a0 But little did I know that our paths would cross again 30 years later and I would have the privilege of screening Chris\u2019 debut directorial feature &#8211; BURNING PALMS.\u00a0 Needless to say, as we have seen with some of Chris\u2019 writing endeavors, such as \u201cDisturbia\u201d, those wheels of his have long been turning.\u00a0 However, with BURNING PALMS, his burning creativity jumps leaps and bounds as he not only writes the script but helms the project from beginning to end, giving us a brilliantly dark, funny, edgy, innovative, engaging and meticulously crafted film \u201cthat\u2019s just balls to the wall crazy and different.\u201d\u00a0 And I just love it.<\/p>\n<p>?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = &#8220;urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office&#8221; \/<\/p>\n<p>Comprised of five little vignettes, the film and each individual story within, is book-ended as a graphic novel.\u00a0 Innovative in its premise, no stories intersect, each stands on its own and with the variety of subversive taboo subjects fueling some of the most hilarious and blackest comedy I have ever seen, there is guaranteed something to whet everyone\u2019s palette.\u00a0 Each story is rooted in the simplicity of \u201cwater cooler\u201d kvetching but pushes the envelopes to the Nth degree of \u201cwhat if\u201d &#8211; Dad and daughter are really close, but what if they are too close?\u00a0\u00a0 We adopted a daughter but what if she\u2019s not really what we want; can we return her?\u00a0 The girl says she was raped but what if she really wasn\u2019t; what if she was really just asking for it?\u00a0 Fueled by this \u201cwhat if\u201d sensibility, every scenario is pushed to a heightened, heated, burning crescendo that explodes with satiric aplomb and no political correctness.\u00a0 Set against the colorful backdrop of Southern California, BURNING PALMS explores five of the most distinctive and notable neighborhoods in the Los Angeles area &#8211; Santa Monica, Westwood, West Hollywood, Holmby Hills and Sherman Oaks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5858\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp3.jpg\" alt=\"bp3\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp3.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Santa Monica, we meet Dennis Marx and live in girlfriend Dedra Davenport.\u00a0 Dennis is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his 14 year old daughter Chloe, er, perhaps a little too anxiously.\u00a0 From the moment Chloe steps off the plane, red flags go up to the average eye on viewing this relationship between father and daughter.\u00a0 There are no boundaries.\u00a0 Dennis lets Chloe drink.\u00a0 Talk of sex and \u201cstyle\u201d between the two is restaurant table discussion. Hints of an unnatural sexual casualness between the two creates more than an uneasiness for Dedra, who is seduced by the Green-Eyed Monster (with a little help from Chloe) leading to some surprising results.\u00a0\u00a0 Dylan McDermott and Rosamund Pike easily tackle the roles of Dennis and Dedra.\u00a0 With razor-edge sharpness, McDermott walks that fine line between right and wrong, giving multi-textural depth to Dennis beyond \u201cwhat appears to be.\u201d\u00a0 Very interesting crafting of the performance.\u00a0 Rosamund Pike is flawless as Dedra. Drawn to the film because \u201cI loved the concept of the individual stories\u201d and it is a \u201cvery very black comedy\u201d, Pike embraced the experience with precision and intensity.\u00a0 And the admiration was mutual with Landon.\u00a0 \u201cShe was able to really find that quality [vulnerability] in the character.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter how on the surface put together they are, she\u2019s still so broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over in Westwood, Ginny and Chad are a couple of crazy college kids in love.\u00a0 But what happens when Chad asks for a slightly unusual sexual favor from the somewhat prudish Ginny?\u00a0 Giving in to her beloved but consumed by guilt, Ginny\u2019s obsessive-compulsive personality goes into hyper-drive in a dark, unique and hilarious fashion.\u00a0 Jamie Chung and Chad Bower have an easy going chemistry on screen and are enjoyable to watch, but Chung steals this short with an over-the-top compulsiveness that will have you in stitches. This is not the girl we saw in Disney\u2019s \u201cPrincess Protection Program\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Geri and Tom are the perfect life partners.\u00a0 Living the good life over in West Hollywood, there is one thing missing in their idyllic existence &#8211; a child.\u00a0 So what does any good gay couple do when they want a child?\u00a0 Go on the black market and buy one.\u00a0 Sadly, they forgot about <em>Caveat Emptor<\/em> for when their precious little \u201cMahogany\u201d isn\u2019t quite up their standards and exhibits some rather feral behavior, the couple faces a dilemma.\u00a0 We can\u2019t return her and get our money back, so what do we do?\u00a0 Answer:\u00a0\u00a0 Look for the nearest forest in LA.\u00a0 Anson Moun is a standout as Tom and perfect foil to the antics of Peter Macdissi\u2019s Geri.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5860\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp5.jpg\" alt=\"bp5\" width=\"400\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp5-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Sherman Oaks, we meet Sarah, a shy, skittish woman who has a very claustrophobic life; that is, until raped by the pizza delivery man.\u00a0 Not telling anyone of the incident and trying to figure out what to do, Sarah gets her answer when she finds the rapist\u2019s wallet on her floor.\u00a0\u00a0 Hunting him down with dogged determination, Sarah has only one thing on her mind &#8211; I want more.\u00a0 Zoe Saldana and Nick Stahl are amazing as Sarah and rapist Robert.\u00a0 Stahl brings a great sense of innocence to Robert while Saldana shows a side of her we haven\u2019t seen before.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the spoiled little brats in Holmby Hills who have nothing to do but torment each other and those around them.\u00a0 One of their victims is their maid, Blanca, whose dead baby\u2019s umbilical cord that she has saved forever, is now missing.\u00a0 Playing judge and jury, the boys hold their own kangaroo court with findings and revelations more astounding than the OJ Simpson verdict.\u00a0 Be on the lookout for Austin Williams as Nicholas.\u00a0 Having seen him in \u201cPhoebe in Wonderland\u201d and now BURNING PALMS, he is destined for stardom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5859\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp4.jpg\" alt=\"bp4\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp4-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by Christopher B. Landon, a fresh, distinctive style of filmmaking emerges providing a wonderful balance of character\u2019s mental imbalances, disturbing hush-hush scenarios and comedy, with stunning visual and emotional results.\u00a0 Standout is Landon\u2019s\u00a0 use of satire and humor.\u00a0 Powerful yet tactful, he covers all the bases with dark humor, flat out laugh-out-loud funny humor, sexual humor, gay humor, parental humor, kid humor &#8211; none of which is contrived but just naturally flows from the topical scenarios created.\u00a0 Not the sort of film one would expect to pop off the top of the head, Landon had a creative process for BURNING PALMS.\u00a0 \u201cI sort of keep a file of ideas, articles and thoughts.\u00a0 I was between studio gigs and I had wanted to write one of the stories [\u201cManeater\u201d] so I just sat down one day and I wrote it.. I didn\u2019t think about it.\u00a0 I just knew that it was going to be a short piece.\u00a0 When I finished it, I went back and reread it and I thought it was really interesting.\u00a0 Very intriguing.\u00a0 So I started tackling these other little ideas that I had and started putting them together&#8230;I went back and reread all fo them and thought this is kind of a \u201cCreep Show LA\u2019 piece. I was waffling between should I make this a series, a movie.\u00a0 Ultimately it linked on wanting to make it a feature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a deliberately punctuated use of color, there is a lightness and breeziness within each vignette that is juxtopositioned against the disturbing elements of each story, all used to reel you in to the twisted hilarity of the situations.\u00a0\u00a0 For Landon, the creation of each individual palette was critical to the film as a whole.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhen it came to creating the palette [Landon and Tierney] had long conversations about what each story and how they felt.\u00a0 For instance, in Santa Monica, we talked about having a cool feel; almost an eerie kind of feel and wanted the red to pop.\u00a0 When we got into West Hollywood&#8230; I really wanted the pink to come out.\u00a0 That sort of innocent, childlike, bright cheery feel but obviously in sharp contrast to what\u2019s really going on in the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5857\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp2.jpg\" alt=\"bp2\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/bp2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Clean edged, crisp lensing and artful balances of light make the film visually engaging and appealing.\u00a0 Directory of Photography Seamus Tierney&#8217;s framing is appropriate to each individual story with close-ups being used sparingly and appropriately, adding intensity only when necessary to fuel the emotional palette.\u00a0 With \u201can instant rapport\u201d between Tierney and Landon, \u201cHe understood the tone.\u00a0 He understood what I was looking for.\u00a0 It was happy marriage from the very beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On watching BURNING PALMS, no one would ever suspect this was Landon\u2019s directorial debut.\u00a0 The meticulous precision and polish of the film belies the work of a novice who tosses in everything but the kitchen sink.\u00a0 It is evident that every minute aspect of this production was methodically planned and calculated by Landon.\u00a0 Always wanting to go beyond writing, \u201cI was also looking for something to direct.\u00a0 Initially I had no intention of directing BURNING PALMS but then I realized the really easy and obvious thing for me to do was to go off and make a relatively\u00a0 low budget genre movie.\u00a0 But my concern was that it would just get lost in the shuffle.\u00a0 So I went back [to my producer] and he said this is crazy for me to do it, but I thought this may be just what I need, so I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believe Landon\u2019s father would be proud of Chris for BURNING PALMS.\u00a0 In speaking with Chris, he has many of the same sensibilities and attention to detail that made his father even better behind the camera than in front. Chris understands story and character and he knows how to convey it both visually and through words.\u00a0\u00a0 As Landon himself\u00a0 opines, \u201c[BURNING PALMS] is a really unusual movie that\u2019s a very mixed bag in terms of how people perceive it.\u00a0 There are people that absolutely love it and it\u2019s dark, twisted sense of humor.\u00a0 And then there are people that are incredibly put off and offended.\u00a0 What\u2019s important to me is that, it\u2019s mine.\u00a0 I\u2019m proud of the fact that we made something that I really feel\u00a0 that nobody else has made before.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u00a0 not like I\u2019m reinventing the wheel, but I really feel like we made a film that you can\u2019t really compare to very many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I am one of the people that absolutely loves BURNING PALMS and its dark, twisted sense of humor.\u00a0 And trust me, you will be too.<\/p>\n<p>Written and Directed by Christopher B.
