Wasn\u2019t there at least one person who made you miserable? One person that always seemed to one up you, get in your face and make your life a living hell?\u00a0 Sure there was.\u00a0 And didn\u2019t you always wish you had the courage to turn the tables and teach these \u201cnightmares\u201d a lesson?\u00a0 Sure you did.\u00a0 And even when we each look deep into ourselves years and even decades later, don\u2019t you still harbor at least some of those feelings, wishing for revenge but glad you never have to see those \u201cpeople\u201d again?\u00a0 Bet you do.\u00a0 But what happens when you walk into the living room of your childhood home years later only to be met with that arch nemesis of the past?\u00a0 In your house!\u00a0 Being adored by your mother! And bunking in your bedroom!\u00a0 And marrying your brother!\u00a0 Say, what?\u00a0 Do you smile sweetly and let bygones be bygones or, with the courage of maturity finally enabling you to exact emotional revenge and achieve a peaceful self-satisfaction, do you let he claws come out and the fur fly as you internally shriek in an uncontrollable rage &#8211; YOU AGAIN &#8211; while plotting your next move?\u00a0 Well, my money is on the latter and so is that of writer Moe Jelline and director Andy Fickman who bring us multi-generational betrayal, angst and rivalry showcased with a lot of laughs and a whole lot of talent in what star Jamie Lee Curtis describes as \u201ca cute, fun, chick flick romp. . .silly and fun\u201d, YOU AGAIN.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6118\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain1-348x300.jpg\" alt=\"youagain1\" width=\"348\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain1-348x300.jpg 348w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain1-300x258.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Marni was an ugly duckling in high school.\u00a0 With a bad haircut, braces and bangs, she was the smart girl, the wallflower, the loser loner as opposed to being, well, J.J. aka Joanna\u00a0\u00a0 Miss Popularity, Joanna was thin, gorgeous, head cheerleader, had minions groveling at her feet and following her everywhere.\u00a0 Whatever she wanted, she got.\u00a0 Whoever she wanted, she got.\u00a0 And every minute of every day, she and her cheerleader friends made Marni\u2019s life a living hell.\u00a0\u00a0 But time heals all wounds &#8211; as do contact lenses, a good stylist, great job, and moving thousands of miles away from home to \u201cstart again.\u201d\u00a0 Or do they, for as Marni quickly finds out, seeing Joanna again, in her house, about to marry her brother, the old wounds re-open and when Joanna acts as if she had never met Marni before, enough salt to fill the Seven Seas is poured onto those wounds.\u00a0 Angered by the deception being perpetrated on her family, not to mention still harboring her high school angst and anger towards Joanna, Marni determines to prove to her family that Joanna is not who she appears to be.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6125\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain8.jpg\" alt=\"youagain8\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain8.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain8-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Believing her mother Gail to be her one possible ally, those hopes are quickly dashed with words of kindness and warmth and motherly advice basically telling Marni she is wrong and even if she knew Joanna in high school, time has passed, let\u2019s move on.\u00a0 But what happens when Joanna\u2019s only relative, her aunt Ramona, comes to town for the wedding?\u00a0 You see, jealousy and revenge have no timetable and as Ramona walks into Marni\u2019s home, we see the back arch, muscles tense and the claws come out &#8211; in Gail.\u00a0 Seems that the apples don\u2019t fall far from the trees as in high school, Ramona was to Gail what Joanna was to Marni.\u00a0 Flaunting her wealth, jet setting life and ageless beauty like a set of fresh pom poms, Ramona only serves to rile Gail, needling her the way Joanna needles Marni, and of course, goes even one step further, espousing her love for her former BFF.<\/p>\n<p>Wanting to set a good example for her daughter but still seething inside over her own animosity toward Ramona, Gail puts her own plan into action.\u00a0 With Gail and Marni each with their own agendas, and clearly Joanna and Ramona with theirs, where does this leave the rest of the family and the poor groom?\u00a0 Caught in the middle of the madness, mayhem, a wedding planner and Grandma Bunny.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6123\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain6.jpg\" alt=\"youagain6\" width=\"400\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain6.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain6-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The overall casting of YOU AGAIN is beyond impressive.\u00a0 According to Andy Fickman, \u201cI\u2019ve never had an experience like this. [We] were just kind of getting the people we want.\u00a0 I\u2019d go and meet with Jamie Lee at her house and go back and e-mail the studio, \u2018I &#8211; like &#8211; Jamie &#8211; Lee &#8211; Curtis.\u2019\u00a0 And they were like, \u2018great.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018Sigourney Weaver is in my office.\u00a0 Hey everyone, I just met Sigourney Weaver.\u00a0 She would be good for our small low budget film.\u00a0 What do you say?\u00a0 Oh, by the way, she\u2019s going to be in Avatar.\u00a0 Bet it will be big.\u2019 Literally everyone would be like, Kristen Chenoweth, Victor Garber.\u00a0 Hey everyone, Betty White.\u00a0 How about her? With the exception of Billy Unger and J.J. \u201cOdie\u201d [Odette Yustman], we had everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristen Bell\u2019s comedic skills just get better with each role and here, undoubtedly because of working with her long time friend, Andy Fickman, she shines as Marni.\u00a0 Sweet and nice as a rule, Bell brings these great layers of jealousy and vengeance to Marni with earnest and aplomb that play with sincerity but with a comic edge without going over the top.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And like her mature counterparts, she gets to flex her physical comedy muscles.\u00a0\u00a0 Bell makes Marni both sympathetic and empathetic, touching something in each of us, even when executing her most dastardly plots.\u00a0 Nicely &#8211; and funnily &#8211; done!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6124\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain7.jpg\" alt=\"youagain7\" width=\"400\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain7.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain7-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A newcomer to the Rom-Com genre, Odette Yustman handily tackles the part of \u201cJJ\u201d Joanna, a part for which she begged.\u00a0 Providing an over-zealous initial sweetness to Joanna, Yustman is masterful at turning on a dime not only her emotions but her entire physicality with face, eyes, eyebrows, muscle tone, bringing believable contemptible rivalry and betrayal to the screen.\u00a0\u00a0 But the icing on the cake is her chemistry with Kristen Bell.\u00a0 For Fickman, \u201cWhen I had her and Jimmy Wolk and K-Bell together, I just knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Jamie Lee Curtis opined, \u201cWhat can you say about Betty White except that every single thing you\u2019ve ever heard about her is true.\u201d\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s really \u201cHer Again\u201d with a small but pivotal golden part as Grandma Bunny.\u00a0 Funny as a rubber crutch, White is golden with her one line zingers, pick-up lines and above all, swinging through the air on a silk swing that had Andy Fickman white knuckling over the stunt. \u201c Betty is 88 so you gotta understand when we cast Betty, in my mind it was like casting my mom.\u00a0 Nana can barely operate Jello.\u00a0 When Betty first got cast, I\u2019m talking to her like she\u2019s 2. And she\u2019s looking at me like, \u2018you\u2019re an idiot.\u201d We get ready to do the silk and we brought in a stunt double.\u00a0 Now you can imagine, you can\u2019t find an 88 year old stunt double.\u00a0 So you have a girl that\u2019s 12 wearing the old lady hair.\u00a0 And she looks nothing like Betty.\u00a0 And Betty\u2019s coming in and goes, \u2018What\u2019s she doing?\u2019 I was like, \u2018She\u2019s gonna be your stunt double.\u2019 And Betty\u2019s like, \u2018Why do I need a stunt double?\u00a0 I can do that.\u00a0 I\u2019m 88.\u00a0 Nothing\u2019s killed me yet.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be fine.\u2019\u00a0 So my stunt team are putting her on a silk, harnessing her in.\u00a0 I\u2019m starting to feel slightly comfortable, but it\u2019s a drop.\u00a0 Right before we start, she turns to me and goes, \u2018Honey, you\u2019ll just feel horrible if you\u2019re the one who kills Betty White.\u2019 At which point I race, because they have to crank her back like a slingshot and let her go, I race back to the monitor.\u00a0 I yell, \u2018Action.\u2019\u00a0 She swings.\u00a0 As soon as I know she clears the frame, I yell \u2018Cut.\u2019\u00a0 I race over and she\u2019s like, \u2018Let\u2019s do it again!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6121\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain4.jpg\" alt=\"youagain4\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain4.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain4-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for our middle generational ladies, you can do no better than Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver.\u00a0 As Gail and Ramona, respectively, their exuberance and enthusiasm is infectious.\u00a0 And these women are in shape.\u00a0 Each doing their own dancing and, particularly with Curtis, her own stunt work &#8211; including cheerleading &#8211;\u00a0 they are indefatigable.\u00a0 Weaver admits to rehearsing with her dancing co-star Kyle Bornheimer \u201ca lot, because neither of us knew anything about the samba.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As Curtis describes the dance sequences, \u201cWe shot 8 hours of it and it\u2019s like 14 seconds in the movie.\u00a0 I have an entire sequence in silks.\u00a0 I\u2019m the only one who will go up, I go up, Victor is whipping me around.\u00a0 I\u2019m flailing.\u00a0 It\u2019s pathetic.\u00a0 Talk about rehearsals!\u00a0 Weeks, weeks of web work.\u00a0 And the big dance off.\u00a0 Sigourney and I did that 6 minutes a time, for 100 times.\u00a0 A lot of back and forthing.\u201d\u00a0 Concerned that all of her dancing efforts were for naught, Curtis can rest easy as Fickman has assured that \u201call of it will be on the DVD.\u00a0 It\u2019s all very funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the characters themselves, Weaver, a self-described \u201cdweeb in high school\u201d, finds the part of Ramona interesting.\u00a0 \u201cWhen you are such a loser, it\u2019s a helpful way in to a lot of characters.\u00a0 I think that kind of vulnerability is completely permanent and I think it\u2019s a good thing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Speaking about co-star Curtis, Weaver says \u201cit was a delight to work with her.\u00a0 She\u2019s such an amazing woman and it was really fun to hate her because I really love her.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 For Curtis what stands out as truth and what one discovers for the first time in high school is \u201cbetrayal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not to be overlooked are the talents of Victor Garber who, as Marni\u2019s father and Gail\u2019s husband,\u2019 has one particularly funny scene that is too die for.\u00a0 Beyond notable is the incredible Kristin Chenoweth as wedding planner extraordinaire Georgia.\u00a0 With singing and dancing extravaganzas, Chenoweth is at her Broadway best.\u00a0\u00a0 Jimmy Wolk and Sean Wing also join the fracas as groom to be, Will, and best friend Charlie. Particularly effective are Wing\u2019s scenes with Bell.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6120\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain3-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"youagain3\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain3-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain3.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>YOU AGAIN abounds with cameos &#8211; none of which will be disclosed here as I want each of you to experience the same surprise factor I did.\u00a0 What I will say though is that everyone in cameo has a personal relationship to someone associated with the film. According to Fickman, \u201cIn terms of finding each role, we were just a very close knit family on the set.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t anybody that was a cameo that wasn\u2019t somebody we didn\u2019t discuss.\u00a0\u00a0 It all came about in a really natural way which, in a movie like this, when you\u2019re doing a small ensemble comedy like that, I think that\u2019s the best way.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The hardest cameo to fill, however, was the former love interest of Gail and Ramona.\u00a0 \u201cIt was a really hard role to find because you need to find a guy who both women had sorta fought over who, when you saw him today, he was still dreamy.\u00a0 We found a lot of great actors and then we\u2019d look at what they kind of were looking like today and we were like, \u2018Hmm&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Written by Moe Jelline and directed by Andy Fickman in this his third Disney film, YOU AGAIN has the feel of a series of comedy vignettes all sewn together with the thread of a wedding as the connective tissue amongst all the players and events.\u00a0 While each of the \u201cvignettes\u201d on their own are hysterical (particularly the dance-off\u00a0 &#8211; which should be its own stand alone music video &#8211; and the rehearsal dinner), sadly, there are times where the seams come loose leading to a loss of cohesiveness at various points and a feeling of jet lag.\u00a0 However, thanks to Editor, David Rennie, the comedic pace quickly recovers and resumes.\u00a0 As described by Fickman,\u00a0 \u201cThe hardest thing in editing is when you have a plethora of riches.\u00a0 That\u2019s a good problem to have but the hardest thing is just trying to get that movie from a pacing standpoint and try to figure it out.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Of course this plethora of riches also presented another challenge as \u201cwith a movie like this, you have multiple closure issues.\u00a0 Everybody has to have their closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6119\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain2-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"youagain2\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain2-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain2.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Key to the story, however, are the emotional elements of high school that Jelline\u2019s story captures perfectly.\u00a0 According to Weaver, \u201cI think boys are oblivious in high school.\u00a0 Girls are just more sensitive.\u00a0 We are so concerned about how we look and how we\u2019re doing.\u00a0 But boys find their niche and then they go along.\u00a0 Whereas girls are trying to move niches, trying to attract boys who are oblivious, so all of our nerve endings are much more on high.\u00a0 These things that happen to us in high school, I think, no one feels normal but I think it\u2019s particularly hard for girls.\u00a0 It\u2019s more complicated for girls.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Describing YOU AGAIN as having a \u201cvery sincere base\u201d, Weaver believes that \u201cultimately, for us to carry on, we have to take a cold hard look at what lie do we tell ourselves about who we are, what we were and where we\u2019re going. I think every person in the story is trying to take the blindfolds off and really look at yourself.\u00a0 By the end, Jamie Lee\u2019s character and mine, we realized that what we really missed and what we had really given up was the friendship that we had.\u00a0 It\u2019s very meaningful to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of Andy Fickman\u2019s greatest gifts are his overall energy and enthusiasm compounded by this love for musical theater and comedy which perfectly lend themselves to YOU AGAIN and the \u201cneed\u201d for some great musical numbers, the most delightful and entertaining of which is the dance off between Curtis-Weaver and Bell-Yustman, all punctuated with the song stylings and over-the-top theatrical moves of Kristin Chenoweth and beautifully lensed by cinematographer David Hennings. Another bonus are cheerleading routines that provide great comedic fodder.\u00a0 Kudos to choreographer Mary Ann Kellogg and Christine Lakin!\u00a0 Lakin, whom I adore (and who is one of the nicest people on the planet), not only fills the bill as one of Joanne\u2019s snobby A-lister friends, but served as assistant choreographer to Kellogg working on &#8211; and performing &#8211; the cheerleading routines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6122\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain5.jpg\" alt=\"youagain5\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain5.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/youagain5-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And but with the exception of a red dress worn by both Curtis and Weaver (which fits neither one\u2019s body type), costume designer Genevieve Tyrrell turns out some exemplary work using scarves for Ramona and dazzling duds for Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>No matter how old you get, you may never outlive high school but you\u2019ll always relive it.\u00a0 YOU AGAIN.\u00a0 Fun, laughter . . .and Betty White \u2013 again!<\/p>\n<p>Marni &#8211; Kristen Bell<\/p>\n<p>Joanna &#8211; Odette Yustman<\/p>\n<p>Gail &#8211; Jamie Lee Curtis<\/p>\n<p>Ramona &#8211; Sigourney Weaver<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Andy Fickman.\u00a0 Written by Moe Jelline<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias Think back to your high school days.
