a perfectly charming web of evil enchantment that will delight children of all ages as well as the child in each of us.\u00a0 Truly the first \u201choliday\u201d film of the season, be it Halloween or Christmas,\u00a0 I can see my 77 year old father enjoying this film as much as any of my four nephews from age 4 to 15!\u00a0\u00a0 Move over\u00a0 Disney and Pixar, because there\u2019s a new guy in town.\u00a0 A guy named IGOR.<\/p>\n<p>The Kingdom of Malaria showcases evil, in fact, it thrives on evil.\u00a0 Once a land of happiness, cheer and sunshine days, strange clouds moved over the land plunging Malaria into darkness, causing crops to fail and citizens to despair.\u00a0 (Sound familiar folks?)\u00a0 To save its ailing economy and way of life, Evil became a business bringing prosperity to the King (dom) and capitalizing on the annual Evil Science Fair where evil scientists compete for the title of who can create the most evil invention of them all.\u00a0 For years, the untalented Dr. Schadenfreude has been the winner but only due to his stealing ideas from other scientists, among them, Dr. Glickenstein.\u00a0 But this year, with the help of his assistant Igor, Glickenstein vows to win.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7745\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133640-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133640\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133640-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133640-600x339.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133640-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133640.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Importantly, every scientist has an Igor because in the land of Malaria if you are born with a hump on your back you are automatically an Igor, going to Igor University, earning your Yes Master degree and then spending your life working for an evil scientist.\u00a0 But Dr. Glickenstein\u2019s Igor is different from the others as he knows he is a scientist.\u00a0 In his heart, he knows.\u00a0 For years Igor has been working on his own inventions, among them Brain, a brain in a jar who may be anything but brainy, and Scamper, the anti-Thumper who can\u2019t be killed and who can\u2019t say anything nice about anyone.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, Dr. Glickenstein just dismisses Igor\u2019s ideas and Igor, this year leading to dire results for the Doctor, but giving Igor the opening he needs to create the greatest monster of them all and finally become a true scientist.\u00a0 But, as to be expected, something goes awry with Igor\u2019s creation and the evil monster is anything but evil.\u00a0 The monster turns out to be a monstress named Eva who only wants to be &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; an actress!\u00a0\u00a0 AAAHHHH!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7746\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133653-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133653\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133653-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133653-600x339.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133653-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133653.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With twists and turns galore, with his trusty inventions Brain and Scamper by his side, Igor faces the horror of Dr. Schadenfreude and his henchwoman Jacyln and the impending loss of Eva and the science fair, but more importantly, he uncovers a diabolic plot in Malaria that threatens to destroy their entire world, a plot that only a true hero, or a true scientist with a heart, can stop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7747\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133717-400x224.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133717\" width=\"400\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133717-400x224.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133717-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133717-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133717.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Written by Chris McKenna and directed by Tony Leondis, one of the brains behind the animated Lilo &amp; Stitch: Stitch Has a Glitch\u201d and \u201cHome on the Range\u201d, both knew that to make this animated confection of evil charm work, they would need a great cast of talented actors to do the voicing.\u00a0 According to Leondis, \u201cI wanted to cast really interesting characters and performers, actors.\u00a0 Not just names.\u00a0 It\u2019s great that we got both but I wanted people who knew how to turn a line and make interesting choices because a lot of the humor is offbeat and character driven like that.\u201d\u00a0 And what a cast he got, starting with my fave of the film, John Cusack.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7748\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133727-400x226.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133727\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133727-400x226.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133727-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133727.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cusack not only narrates, but is our hero, Igor.\u00a0 His narration is impeccable.\u00a0 He should start doing kids books on tape. He is invigorating, entertaining, enthusiastic and\u00a0 makes even just the words sound fun even were there no pictures in front of us. As good as he is with this work, he can read me a bedtime story any day of the week.<\/p>\n<p>I had a vision the entire film of kids sitting on a floor cross-legged for story time, chins in their hands, mouths agape, looking at John with rapt attention. And then as Igor, he is a charmer. John has this innate talent for being able to convey emotion just through his voice. You don&#8217;t need to see him to know what he is feeling or what the character is feeling. Very touching were the scenes with Eva when he was realizing his love and caring for her. He was at his Lloyd Dobbler best!\u00a0\u00a0 There is no one who could evoke the emotion of Igor or set the tone of the film better than John.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7749\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133744-400x226.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133744\" width=\"400\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133744-400x226.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133744-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133744.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although McKenna already \u201chad a great version of the script ready\u201d when it came to Leondis, these two brainstormed and \u201cWe wrote the part for Sean [Hayes].\u00a0 We wrote the part for Molly [Shannon].\u00a0 We wrote the part for Jennifer Coolidge [Jaclyn] and we\u2019re praying that they would say yes.\u00a0 We do think in our heads.\u00a0 We start to come up with a character.\u00a0 You take a little from this and a little from this.\u00a0 And you bring the truth to the situation of what they\u2019re going through and what their real situation is.\u201d\u00a0 Luckily, all the principals said \u201cyes\u201d to this project giving us Steve Buscemi who is absolutely killer as Scamper as is Sean Hayes as Brain.\u00a0\u00a0 These two are hilarious and their vocal personas play so well off of each other.\u00a0\u00a0 Molly Shannon&#8217;s Eva surprised the heck out of me. I&#8217;ve never heard her so sweetly &#8220;sedate&#8221; before.\u00a0\u00a0 And Jennifer Coolidge&#8230;..with every syllable uttered you could just picture her sultry self.\u00a0\u00a0 And I believe her character\u2019s animation was the closest to her physical personas we associate with her as an actress.<\/p>\n<p>But let\u2019s take the voicing up another notch and we\u2019ve got\u00a0 John Cleese (who had me laughing hysterically) and Eddie Izzard as our leading evil scientists, Glickenstein and Schadenfreude, and Jay Leno as the King of Malaria.\u00a0 Simply outstanding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7750\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133801-400x221.jpg\" alt=\"2008-09-17_133801\" width=\"400\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133801-400x221.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133801-600x333.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133801-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2008-09-17_133801.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But without a well devised script and enlivening animation, no matter how talented your voice actors, the film would not have the appeal that it does.\u00a0 And thanks to the fertile imaginations of Chris McKenna and Tony Leondis, IGOR packs a wallop starting with the genesis of the story.\u00a0 The story is fresh with\u00a0 an exquisite sweetness to it. And it really spurs the imagination! Incorporating some pop culture with true monster movie lore (evil, Frankenstein and let&#8217;s face it, even a little Rocky Horror\u00a0 at times) and some very irreverent tongue-in-cheek comedy (blind orphans!!! gotta love it!) and you&#8217;ve got something for everything. There is no banality anywhere in the script, the story or the characters.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 McKenna even builds tension in a few scenes that will have kids on the edge of their seat&#8230;.will the monster get built? Will Igor discover what&#8217;s a top the &#8220;evil beam&#8221;? I can hear the little voices gasp now! And the action is just superlative!\u00a0\u00a0 John Cusack, a big fan of old Boris Karloff, Claude Raines movies and Mel Brooks \u201cFrankenstein\u201d agrees,\u00a0 opining, \u201cThe script was real great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to McKenna, \u201c I was thinking about doing something with evil scientists.\u00a0 I just love that world. What if you had a whole land that every mountaintop had the stereotypical mad scientist, evil scientist, working away in a castle laboratory.\u00a0 I started thinking, would they all have a hunchback lab assistant?\u00a0 Would they all have an Igor?\u00a0 Then I started thinking, that\u2019s the story.\u00a0 Where do these Igor\u2019s come from?\u00a0 What if you had this land where if you are born with a hunch on your back you are immediately named Igor and you are forced to be a lab assistant? I wanted to do a riff on the world of Frankenstein and upend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But then let\u2019s toss in the animation under Leondis\u2019 steady hand.\u00a0 The CGI animation is perfect for this film. Not smooth slick Disneyesque animation, but more Warner Bros. Road Runner cartoon with a tinge of anime and Rankin Bass stop motion appeal providing\u00a0 a rough hewn edge that is masterful with monsters and evil scientists!\u00a0\u00a0 Leondis, a huge fan of Rankin Bass (those folks that brought us the beloved \u201cRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer\u201d), knew that he \u201creally wanted this world to be collaged.\u00a0 I collaged time periods.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little in the Duquensian world.\u00a0 There\u2019s turn of the century.\u00a0 There\u2019s\u00a0 a little 60&#8217;s in there.\u00a0 The Brain Wash is a car wash from the 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 I wanted it to feel like we were creating something new and its own universe; it exists in its own universe.\u00a0 I knew we had to have very clear shapes for the characters and very non-human like characters because the more human they are, the more you can see the imperfections.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I love the Rankin Bass look.\u00a0 All those beautifully designed characters and puppets.\u00a0 I wanted you to feel.\u00a0 I wanted you to feel the texture.\u00a0 I wanted you to feel like they were toys moving around.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Believe me, Leondis more than makes you feel and then some.<\/p>\n<p>Paying particular attention to the background storyboarding, Leondis called on Art Director Olivier Besson for his expert eye.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI had in my head a lot of what I wanted.\u00a0 I bought all these books and things and gave it to Olivier and said, a little of this, a little of this, and a world is somewhere in here.\u00a0 We had two months to find the style of the film.\u00a0 All through production we were doing all of the background.\u00a0 We were all just doing a little of everything so that made it exciting.\u00a0 It has a singular vision because there were very few people on the project.\u201d\u00a0 The attention to detail is meticulous.<\/p>\n<p>Sean Hayes \u201cthought it was amazing that Chris and Tony and everybody involved created a new kind of tone and world and feeling that we haven\u2019t seen before and I think that\u2019s amazing that Exodus did that.\u00a0 It was exciting to be part of something new.\u00a0 The sharp edges of the drawings and the kind of darkness of it but still kid-friendly and the eccentricity of it.\u00a0 I loved all of that.\u00a0 It\u2019s clever and witty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As if the story, the voices, the action, the animation aren\u2019t enough, Leondis went above and beyond with his use of music selecting Louis Prima standards.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted something that was timeless.\u00a0 I grew up with big band music and Louis [Prima] is funny but his songs are about something.\u00a0 I thought he was a great internal voice for Igor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is there not to love about IGOR?\u00a0 I can\u2019t think of a thing.\u00a0 IGOR is golden.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking a Best Animated Picture Oscar nomination here.\u00a0\u00a0 Pure lovable evil enchantment that, like Scamper, will never die!<\/p>\n<p>Igor &#8211; John Cusack\u2028Eva &#8211; Molly Shannon\u2028Brain &#8211; Sean Hayes\u2028Scamper &#8211; Steve Buscemi\u2028Jaclyn &#8211; Jennifer Coolidge<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Tony Leondis.\u00a0 Written by Chris McKenna.
