{"id":784,"date":"2014-05-20T08:54:51","date_gmt":"2014-05-20T15:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=784"},"modified":"2014-10-11T09:05:57","modified_gmt":"2014-10-11T16:05:57","slug":"robert-stromberg-makes-magic-with-maleficent-exclusive-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/interviews\/robert-stromberg-makes-magic-with-maleficent-exclusive-11\/","title":{"rendered":"ROBERT STROMBERG Makes Magic with MALEFICENT &#8211; Exclusive 1:1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By:\u00a0debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With script by Linda Woolverton and John Lee Hancock, and led by animator\/artist\/ production designer\/art director\/VFX and two-time Oscar winner\u00a0 Robert Stromberg, who makes his directorial debut (finally!), MALEFICENT has cast its spell on the world.\u00a0 Crossing the $200 million mark this weekend, MALEFICENT\u2019s success proves that nobody does fairy tales better than Disney and thanks to some great imagination and exquisite storytelling that adds a new twist to classic legend and lore, brought to life with breathtaking visuals that stun, immerse, dazzle with heart-stopping beauty and emotion, infused with an indelible powerhouse performance by Angelina Jolie, it\u2019s obvious why MALEFICENT wraps you in the most magical of spells.\u00a0 And it\u2019s thanks to the guiding eye of director Robert Stromberg that MALEFICENT is as magnificent as it is.<\/p>\n<p>I seriously doubt that any director other than Robert Stromberg\u00a0 (even a visualist like Tim Burton) could have stepped in and brought MALEFICENT to life with such incredible detail, depth and texture, creating a tonal bandwidth that finds the perfect balance and discussion of good versus evil, love versus hate.\u00a0 With Stromberg&#8217;s background in VFX, production design, art direction and even old school matte painting background, he puts every bit of skill and every element to use in the design of MALEFICENT.\u00a0 Then you toss in Dean Semler&#8217;s lighting and lensing and the screen dazzles with a delicate emotional and tonal balance that mirrors the delicacy of fairy spells.<\/p>\n<p>As he even bragged to the publicists with an immediate \u201cwe go way back\u201d on my entering the room, Robert Stromberg and I have crossed paths countless times over the past almost 30 years both in and out of the production arena.\u00a0\u00a0 Seeing his work and watching his talents expand and grow over the years has been a privilege, so it\u2019s always a joy to reconnect and catch up, but never moreso than now with this exclusive 1:1 interview as this is our first meeting where Bob is now a bonafide \u201cdirector\u201d; something I have long believed he was destined to do.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-785\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-robert-stromberg.jpg\" alt=\"maleficent - robert stromberg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-robert-stromberg.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-robert-stromberg-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I have to say right out of the box, Bob, that no one but you with your disciplines and creative skills and background could have made MALEFICENT.\u00a0\u00a0 This is mesmerizing.\u00a0 It is magical.\u00a0 It is masterful.\u00a0 I fell in love with this while watching.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aaah!\u00a0 What a great thing to say.\u00a0\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 What a great compliment.\u00a0 Thank you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between you and Dean Semler [cinematographer], the two of you created palettes with the moors that herald an ethereal beauty that harkens to a Maxfield Parrish painting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was some inspiration there for sure.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been a big fan of <strong><em>Hudson River School<\/em><\/strong>, the artists of that ilk,<strong><em> Frederick Church and Albert Bierstadt<\/em><\/strong> and those guys.\u00a0 Dean, ironically &#8211; we talked about that &#8211; knew all about that because they were able to accomplish with just paint a great mood in the lighting of that they were painting. . . Dean\u2019s a great guy and I think we just really hit it off right away because we were talking exactly the same language.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you also do here that is so key, you bring in all the touchstones from the illustrations of the Brothers Grimm books so you are true to the Briar Rose story to a point, and then all the hallmarks from Disney\u2019s SLEEPING BEAUTY.\u00a0 But then you take Linda Woolverton\u2019s script &#8211; and I can see John Lee Hancock\u2019s influence in the scripting &#8211; and you spin everything and do this reversal of good versus evil, you shift the positions of MALEFICENT and Stefan and captivate with a tonal shift where as Stefan gets darker, MALEFICENT gets lighter.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They started off on the same playing field and <strong><em>it really is a character study<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The thing we were intentionally trying to do is say that they both have the same opportunity.\u00a0 They could be in love and stay that way or, as we do,\u00a0 we explore two characters going down separate paths.\u00a0 One is sort of obsessed with success and greed, and the other is of course, betrayed.\u00a0 There\u2019s a loss.\u00a0 You understand why MALEFICENT doesn\u2019t believe there\u2019s such a thing as true love.\u00a0 The other [Stefan] is so obsessed, he doesn\u2019t have time to discover anything called love.\u00a0<strong><em> I love that their two characters cross each other and Aurora is the catalyst of what changes one and not the other.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-787\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-12-christening.jpg\" alt=\"maleficent - print 12 - christening\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-12-christening.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-12-christening-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What I found quite interesting is that with the character of MALEFICENT, and it\u2019s something we have never really seen in a Disney film &#8211; we always see true love, we see happy endings, we see predictability &#8211; here, not only don\u2019t we have predictability, beyond that we have heartbreak.\u00a0 We have never had real heartbreak with ramifications and repercussions in a Disney film.\u00a0 This I find so delicious and so invigorating to see in the film.\u00a0 It\u2019s really upping the game with Disney and their storytelling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you.\u00a0 <strong><em>Those are parts of real life<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think you can hide them from everybody because we all deal with everyone of those situations in our own lives.\u00a0 We\u2019re not always happy people.\u00a0 We have things that happen that steer our own lives in different directions.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter of if we want to recover from that or if we discover a way to recover from that.\u00a0 <strong><em>All the issues from dark, light, happy, sad, friend, betrayal &#8211; all those things are things we deal with in our own lives and that\u2019s probably why we can relate to it in a film like this.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This film is much more grounded in the world.\u00a0 It can resonate with more people than straight fairy tales will.\u00a0 Everybody wants the escapism of fairy tales and with MALEFICENT you get the fairy tale but the touchstone to reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think you hit it on the head.\u00a0 As soon as you start going down the road of fairy tale there\u2019s a sort of pattern that you\u2019re supposed to follow.\u00a0 Girl meets prince and happy ending.\u00a0 The whole evil is destroyed and happy ending.\u00a0 <strong><em>I think in our film, you don\u2019t know what\u2019s gonna happen because it\u2019s those elements but they\u2019re sort of mixed up in a blender and then what comes out of that is a different kind of fairy tale concoction.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s very redemptive.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another thing we see with the character of Aurora is the freedom of choice, free will. She chooses.\u00a0 She chooses MALEFICENT over Stefan when she releases the wings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think people will talk amongst themselves about her reasons, but there\u2019s a bond that over time they have with each other and that bond is lost with Stefan because of his distance.\u00a0 Those are elements, even in my own life I can relate to that &#8211; where parents get divorced and you don\u2019t see somebody for a great period of time &#8211; all of those mean something to me personally.\u00a0 <strong><em>Our decisions we make are based on who was there to care for us.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong> And that relates to my own life.\u00a0 <strong><em>But that\u2019s what makes this film interesting.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just this movie by numbers fairy tale.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-775\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Maleficent-1-400x167.jpg\" alt=\"Maleficent - 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Maleficent-1-400x167.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Maleficent-1-1024x428.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Maleficent-1-1400x585.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Maleficent-1-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The production design and the creation of the worlds, especially the world of the moors, is beauty personified.\u00a0 How did you go about designing the characters and the look of the moors?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For me, again, it goes back to probably a lot of the artists I\u2019ve admired over the years, some that we just mentioned, and the Hudson River School, but <strong><em>a lot of them are ideas that I\u2019ll just be sketching one day.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Probably five years ago, I had an idea for a creature and just pencil drew it and stuck it in a file; then landscape, just out of nowhere.\u00a0 I love to just sort of do things and play around but they never amount to anything until a situation arises.\u00a0 I probably had a lot of these ideas and the looks for things that had been waiting to be born.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They are all so distinctive yet they look different but they belong together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t want it to feel like \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d creatures or \u201cStar Wars\u201d or something else.\u00a0 <strong><em>You try and be as original as you can be<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 People will always compare something to something else but when you\u2019re creating something, or at least when I\u2019m creating something, it\u2019s never to try and be similar to something else.\u00a0 <strong><em>I\u2019m always trying to be original <\/em><\/strong>but it\u2019s really hard to do when there are thousands of creatures out there with big ears and eyes that look a certain way so sometimes it\u2019s hard to be original.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All of your creatures, especially in the moors, have a very organic look.\u00a0 They look like they came from nature.\u00a0 I like that touch because it further steeps you in the Edenesque world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think not only the creatures, but the three pixies are wearing organic elements.\u00a0 <strong><em>Their costumes &#8211; I designed their costumes &#8211; are made from items from nature.\u00a0 Even MALEFICENT\u2019s costumes are all intentionally molded from organic materials.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of that you can really see, particularly with MALEFICENT\u2019s crown and the colors; even the blacks.\u00a0 People don\u2019t realize how many hues of black there are and each one mirrors an emotion of the moment.\u00a0 To me that is so standout, the meticulous nature of that detail.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first time I realized <strong><em>the power of this, the global psychological thing<\/em><\/strong> that\u2019s happening that you\u2019re not aware of, <strong><em>is when I did AVATAR.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 When I went to Jim [Cameron] and I pitched this idea which was &#8211; Can I talk about that film for a second?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you arrive on Pandora, it\u2019s raining and it\u2019s dark and it doesn\u2019t feel comfortable.\u00a0 Then you go in this room and this guy tells you if you go out there, you\u2019re gonna die.\u00a0 This place is horrible, dah, dah, dah, dah.\u00a0 And this is the character hearing all this &#8211; Sam Worthington\u2019s Jake.\u00a0 Over time in the movie, the pitch was that we will discover the beauty of the planet through Jake\u2019s eyes.\u00a0 He goes out there and he\u2019s attacked by wolves.\u00a0 It\u2019s still dark.\u00a0 And then when Neytiri [Zoe Saldana] arrives, we start to see beauty in this place that we were told was awful.\u00a0 And then over time, more and more you realize as an audience member, \u201cHey, wait a minute.\u00a0 Those guys were lying to me.\u00a0 This place is beautiful.\u201d\u00a0 So, you automatically take the side of the people we want you to be with.\u00a0 So that\u2019s a huge thing just with the environment &#8211; psychological steering.\u00a0 I think it can be said [with MALEFICENT] as well.\u00a0 <strong><em>We start the movie off in a very friendly look to everything and then as MALEFICENT\u2019s character does dark, gets sad, we steer the environment towards her mood<\/em><\/strong> and that is then slowly revealed and then at the end, of course, she\u2019s back.\u00a0 So we\u2019ve come full circle.\u00a0 It\u2019s always there, <strong><em>this whole global psychological steering of the mood of the movie through the visuals is important to me.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I always find that very fascinating.\u00a0 So many directors miss the boat with that aspect of storytelling and don\u2019t consider that, so when I see something that is perfectly executed as MALEFICENT, it elates me to no end.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re the best!\u00a0 You\u2019re the best!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-788\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-10.jpg\" alt=\"maleficent - print 10\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-10.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/maleficent-print-10-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk to me about James Newton Howard\u2019s score.\u00a0 His music is always phenomenal.\u00a0 But what you\u2019ve done with the score here &#8211; and yes, it\u2019s very rich and lush and swelling as MALEFICENT is soaring with her wings &#8211; but for the most part the score is very much like a cloud that is wafting along with the story.\u00a0 We don\u2019t even realize it\u2019s there.\u00a0 It\u2019s another one of those subconscious elements.\u00a0 It\u2019s not \u201ctaking us\u201d anywhere.\u00a0 So often a score will lead you and tell you what you\u2019re going to feel or supposed to feel but this just wafts along.\u00a0 But then you get to hear the full richness and power of the music when you stay through the credits and you hear the complete and total beauty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMALEFICENT\u2019s Suite\u201d is at the tail of the credits.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it beautiful?\u00a0 I love James.\u00a0 The first day I met James, went to his place &#8211; I grew up with film music.\u00a0 My brother is a film composer and I\u2019ve listened going back to Max Steiner and Nicholas Rocha, Bernard Herrmann.\u00a0 I<strong><em> was a huge fan of music because I knew how important it was emotionally to a movie<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The first day I met James Newton Howard, I said in so many words, \u201cI don\u2019t care what you\u2019ve been doing, but <strong><em>I want to make one of those huge big old school film scores<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 His eyes lit up and he said, \u201cNo pun intended, but that\u2019s music to my ears.\u201d\u00a0 We immediately became friends because I could tell that he\u2019s been wanting to do that for a long time and he\u2019s told me many times that this has been the most fun for him in a long time if not ever in working on a film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what was the most fun for you working on MALEFICENT?\u00a0 You had a pretty good toolbox for this one!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s for the first time <strong><em>being able to play with all of the paints and paintbrushes<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 There was one ingredient missing before this &#8211;
