{"id":7905,"date":"2010-08-16T05:45:15","date_gmt":"2010-08-16T12:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=7905"},"modified":"2014-10-22T13:48:43","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T20:48:43","slug":"fur-an-imaginary-portrait-of-diane-arbus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/fur-an-imaginary-portrait-of-diane-arbus\/","title":{"rendered":"FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fragility of life, the fragility of love, the fragility of self and the inherent beauty therein.\u00a0 Such is FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7909\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_2-400x279.jpg\" alt=\"Fur_2\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_2-400x279.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_2-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_2.jpg 487w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Diane Arbus (pronounced Dee-Ann) is one of the most prolific and legendary photographers of our time.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Born in 1917 to a wealthy Jewish family of furriers, her life is a storied one.\u00a0 Her brother, poet Howard Nemerov.\u00a0 At age 14, she met and fell in love with actor Allan Arbus whom she ultimately married 4 years later against her parents vehement objections.\u00a0 Arbus, a photographer who began his career doing photos while in the military, eventually started his own studio (apparently with some help from the Nemerovs) and with Diane and her impeccable taste and sense of style, eventually became the toast of fashion world photography.\u00a0 Arbus, clearly smitten with Diane\u2019s keen eye, shepherded her with rudimentary instruction in photography.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t until some years later, that her own artistic desire and curiosity took hold, propelling her into a fantastical world of visionary delight.\u00a0 But what was it that pushed her into her own?\u00a0 Known for her provocative and evocative works of what many may deem to be unusual subjects or even freaks (take for example possibly her most famous photographer of Eddie Carmel, \u201cThe Jewish Giant\u201d or \u201cIdentical Twins\u201d &#8211; a photo mimicked on film in Stanley Kubrick\u2019s \u201cThe Shining\u201d and which is the seventh highest selling photo of all time) FUR hypothesizes as to what unleashed the artist within, what compelled her, what fueled her obsession with the unique and unusual.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Based on the biography by Patricia Bosworth and extensive interviews with Arbus family members and friends of Diane, screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson gives us a spellbinding romanticized tale of an enigmatic and very private talent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7910\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_3-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fur_3\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_3-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_3-300x473.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_3.jpg 437w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The time is 1958.\u00a0 Diane Arbus is the epitome of prim and proper high society.\u00a0\u00a0 Picture perfect, her home, her children, her lifestyle, are as idealized as that depicted in her husband\u2019s photographs.\u00a0 Dutiful and mindful of her obligations and societal status, it is clear that this public Diane is not the real Diane.\u00a0 The world sees what she wants it to see or what it chooses to see\u00a0 &#8211; as if her life is no more than a posed photograph.\u00a0\u00a0 With glimpses of her self-eroticism and fantasy, as she knows, so do we &#8211; there is more to Diane than meets the eye.\u00a0 Her fantasies and curiosities, however, soon bubble forth as a new tenant arrives at the brownstone in which the Arbuses live and work.<\/p>\n<p>Swathed in clothing from head to toe with a burlap mask covering his face, Diane is mesmerized and spellbound with curiosity over this masked man.\u00a0 Peering out the window through a slit in the window curtains, her wonder is evident as odd looking, yet richly textured and colorful furnishings arrive.\u00a0 Even this man in his mysterious garb has eye-catching touches of color and texture &#8211; not at all like the satin finished pastel sheen of Diane\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>In one bold move, Diane ultimately sneaks out of the house late in the evening.\u00a0 Putting on a vivid blue eyelet dress with her unused Rolleiflex camera suspended from her neck, Diane makes a trepidatious ascent to the upper floor of the building.\u00a0 Her ruse is well planned.\u00a0 Photos.\u00a0 She wants to take the tenant\u2019s photo.\u00a0 As she climbs higher and higher, the class distinctions become more obvious.\u00a0 With each floor she climbs, wallpaper peels and paint chips revealing layers of lives that had come before &#8211; and all so much richer, vivacious and electric than the pale pastels of Diane\u2019s world.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ultimately, Diane reaches the door.\u00a0\u00a0 You can feel her nervous sweat.\u00a0 The tingle of excitement.\u00a0\u00a0 Eyeing the tenant through the golden peephole, she is invited into his home.<\/p>\n<p>What Diane sees is not to be believed.\u00a0\u00a0 A fantastical world.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lush, textured, alive and yet with all the propriety of high society.\u00a0 Tea in china cups.\u00a0 A man in a meticulously tailored suit.\u00a0 Impeccable posture.\u00a0 Pinkies extended.\u00a0\u00a0 Perfect elocution in his speech.\u00a0 A home filled to the brim with life.\u00a0 Crowded but comfortable.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But, Diane hasn\u2019t seen it all &#8211; not yet.\u00a0\u00a0 With eyes covered, she is led to a Roman or Turkish bath in the home.\u00a0 Slowly she descends into the waters as if a baptismal.\u00a0 And then she sees Lionel.\u00a0\u00a0 Covered in hair from head to toe, Lionel suffers from hypertrichosis.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Although one might expect to be repelled at the site of Lionel, neither Diane nor the audience, is.\u00a0 Rather, all are drawn to him.\u00a0 There is a comfortable yet erotically compelling\u00a0 mysticism about him.\u00a0\u00a0 And that is all it takes for Diane to embark on her journey of self-exploration, self-expression and love.<\/p>\n<p>Set against a backdrop of intimate late night gatherings between the two, like looking through the lens of a camera, we are privy to the blossoming of not only a forbidden love, but a forbidden life.\u00a0\u00a0 Ah, but Lionel.\u00a0 Lionel brings Diane to life.\u00a0 By sharing his life, she begins to live hers.\u00a0 Drawing closer to Lionel and further from her husband, she tries to bring the two worlds together, making the two parts into a whole as she becomes whole.\u00a0 Her narrow focal point is soon no more as the aperture of her life grows ever wider.\u00a0 And of course, at the root of it all is love and passion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7908\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_1-400x282.jpg\" alt=\"Fur_1\" width=\"400\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_1-400x282.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_1-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_1.jpg 486w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not one to be a spoiler, I will divulge no more of the story as it is something to be experienced first-hand.\u00a0 It cannot be told.\u00a0 It needs to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Kidman takes on the daunting task of playing a very real person with a perspective built on fact and fiction.\u00a0 It is a precarious balancing act to be sure, but Kidman embraces the petite, introverted, obedient, recessive Diane with a tacitly compelling strength and curiosity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With the unbridled joy of newborn colt, once exposed to Lionel\u2019s world, she has an expressive wide-eyed wonderment that is captivating and contagious.\u00a0 Yet, at the same time, her sensuality is undeniable &#8211; especially when interacting with Robert Downey, Jr.\u2019s Lionel.\u00a0\u00a0 And I have to say, words fail me in describing Downey\u2019s performance.\u00a0 This is the finest performance of his career and demands attention from Oscar.\u00a0\u00a0 Either covered in hair or swaddled in masks and head-to-toe clothing, his eyes and lips speak volumes.\u00a0\u00a0 As the story progresses and we learn more about Lionel, there is a vulnerability underlying his conviction of character that is undeniable.\u00a0 Exuding a confident softness, he\u00a0 erotically romantic, hypnotic even.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Spellbinding.\u00a0 Absolutely mesmerizing.\u00a0 It is impossible to take your eyes from the screen when Kidman and Downey are together.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Their performances are captivatingly laced with a romantic and sensual eroticism that grows into an explosive, passionate once-in-a-lifetime love.\u00a0 This is their film but particularly that of Robert Downey, Jr.\u00a0 He has never been better.<\/p>\n<p>Not to overlook the supporting players, Ty Burrell is stellar as Allan Arbus.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Talented, harried and totally reliant on his wife, it is enjoyable to watch the transformation of this 1950&#8217;s man-of-the-family as he realizes he is not the king of the castle and he cannot make it on his own.\u00a0 Burrell gives us a man who despite realizing his shortcomings and failings, still tries to be \u201cthe man\u201d, but without admitting he should have been looking at life and Diane through a wide-angle lens.\u00a0\u00a0 Jane Alexander and Harris Yulin are ideal as Diane\u2019s parents.\u00a0 Always a woman of strength and character, Jane Alexander epitomizes the 50&#8217;s high society matriarch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7911\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_Poster-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"Fur_Poster\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_Poster-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_Poster-690x1024.jpg 690w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_Poster-300x445.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Fur_Poster.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Screenwiter Erin Cressida Wilson reteams with \u201cSecretary\u201d partner, director Steven Shainberg, giving us a winning one-two punch combination.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The dialogue is well written, nay, well crafted, and particularly witty and sly where Lionel is concerned.\u00a0\u00a0 From the opening shot of Diane Arbus swathed in a uniquely looking fur coat with Rolleiflex camera slung around her neck walking up to the gates of a nudist colony, your own hairs stand on end with excitement and wonder.\u00a0 The development of the characters is pointed and well-timed, exposing intimate details and secrets of each within each frame of the film.\u00a0\u00a0 Capitalizing on Arbus\u2019 own photographic works and her uniquely individualized viewpoint of her subjects, Shainberg and Wilson\u2019s \u201cimaginary portrait\u201d more than fills the imagination.\u00a0 Arbus\u2019 own works voyeuristic, we are treated as voyeurs to Arbus\u2019 life and more importantly, her heart.<\/p>\n<p>Concentrating on visuals, the photographic references are undeniable.\u00a0 Everything is seen through a lens.\u00a0 The eyelet of the fabric of Diane\u2019s dress that seemed to be the one most worn during her visits with Lionel, the peepholes on front doors &#8211; Lionel\u2019s wide enough to see more than an eye and viewable in and out while the Arbus\u2019 a typical one-way \u201cfish eye\u201d.\u00a0 Color and texture, so rich and deep in Lionel\u2019s world, are enhanced thanks to the cinematography of the legendary Bill Pope.\u00a0 Perhaps the only other cinematographer who could achieve the same effects as Pope is Eduardo Serra.\u00a0 Using the furnishings and textures of Lionel\u2019s home as lenses or frames in and of themselves, so much of the film is shot through a chair rail, or angled behind a chair or through a door or window.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They say eyes are the windows to the soul.\u00a0 So is the camera lens.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Danger, who teamed with Shainberg on \u201cSecretary\u201d comes on board again as production designer.\u00a0 Clearly, her research was impeccable and the juxtapositioning of worlds through Carrie Stewart\u2019s\u00a0 set design and Mark Bridges\u2019 costuming is flawless.\u00a0\u00a0 And of course, kudos, kudos, kudos to Stan Winston Studios for their work with Robert Downey, Jr. as Lionel.\u00a0 The head to toe fur is beyond realistic and despite the medical oddity of the character\u2019s condition, believable.<\/p>\n<p>Surprising.\u00a0 Spellbinding.\u00a0 Sensual.\u00a0 Mesmerizing.\u00a0\u00a0 I am totally and completely impressed and intrigued.\u00a0\u00a0 A beautiful love story.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A wonderful fantasy.\u00a0 Love and life come from the most unexpected places.\u00a0 Here, it is with FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS.<\/p>\n<p>Diane Arbus: Nicole Kidman<\/p>\n<p>Lionel Sweeney: Robert Downey, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Allan Arbus: Ty Burrell<\/p>\n<p>Gertrude Nemerov: Jane Alexander<\/p>\n<p>David Nemerov: Harris Yulin<\/p>\n<p>Directed by Steven Shainberg.\u00a0 Written by Erin Cressida Wilson based on the book \u201cDiane Arbus\u201d by Patricia Bosworth.\u00a0 Rated R.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias The fragility of life, the fragility of love, the fragility of self and the inherent beauty therein.\u00a0 Such is FUR: AN IMAGINARY PORTRAIT OF DIANE ARBUS.
