{"id":8038,"date":"2010-08-15T09:02:31","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T16:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=8038"},"modified":"2014-10-22T15:12:56","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T22:12:56","slug":"centurion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/centurion\/","title":{"rendered":"CENTURION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ninth Roman Legion is legendary.\u00a0 Their bravery.\u00a0 Their brutality.\u00a0 Their superiority.\u00a0 A true fighting machine with cunning and strength.\u00a0\u00a0 Centurions all.\u00a0 Raised in 65 BC in Spain, Julius Caesar\u00a0first commanded the Legion in 61BC, bringing them to Gaul in several years later when they were a commanding presence during the Gallic Wars.\u00a0 Although Caesar disbanded the Legion after his final victory during an African campaign in 46 BC, after his death, Octavian recalled the veterans and they once again took their place as a vital force in Rome\u2019s conquest of the world, fighting in Macedonia, Actium, Spain, Germany and ultimately Britain.\u00a0 But the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Legion \u201cfell off the map\u201d in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Century AD after beginning to suffer some staggering battle losses&#8230;losses which never sat well in Rome.\u00a0 During this time there were also people known as the Picts who lived above Hadrian\u2019s wall in Northern Britain in what is now Scotland.\u00a0 Equally as brave and brutal as the Romans, they were outside the domain of Rome and intended to stay that way, something that displeased the Empire.\u00a0\u00a0 Although no written recordation, stories have long been told about what happened to the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Legion when it suddenly \u201cdisappeared\u201d after venturing north into the Caledonian mountains in its efforts to gain a stronghold over the Picts.\u00a0\u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8049\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-08-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-08\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-08-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-08-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-08.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For writer\/director Neil Marshall, this is the stuff that dreams are made of &#8211; especially when growing up at Hadrian\u2019s Wall, and having a lifetime to play \u201cwar\u201d in his mind, wondering \u201cwhat if\u201d the Picts ambushed the Legion and one lone man survived.\u00a0 The result is CENTURION.\u00a0 Epic, exhilarating, thrilling.\u00a0 <em>Comminus certamen <\/em>(grab those Latin dictionaries boys &amp; girls).\u00a0 Magnificent expansiveness.\u00a0 Man against man.\u00a0 Man against nature.\u00a0 The will to survive.\u00a0 Bloodletting and some of the finest battle sequences you will ever see on film.\u00a0 Oh yeah, and a very buff Michael Fassbender and Dominic West.\u00a0 What is not to love about this film???<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8048\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-07-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-07\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-07-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-07-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-07.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>General Virilius has the daunting task of leading the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Legion deep into the north, exterminating and eliminating anything and anyone that tries to stop them.\u00a0 This is the final foothold, the crowing glory for Rome should he succeed in his mission.\u00a0 Fresh off a strong of victories, Virilius and his men are ready to finish conquering the world and go head to head with the Picts. Deemed as nothing but savages, Virilius sees this as a relatively easy battle, especially when he is given Etain, a Pict huntress with tracking skills of a wolf.\u00a0 Although Pict, she seeks to serve Rome and has done so in the past.<\/p>\n<p>As the Legion marches toward the Pict village intent on executing one of their patented surprise attacks, the tables turn when the Picts attack the Romans.\u00a0 Someone has betrayed the Empire!\u00a0 Emerging from the darkness and the wooded region like thieves in the night, the Picts are relentless in their slaughter of the Romans.\u00a0 Using precision military tactics, the Legion tries to hold its line, but is over-powered by the elements of surprise, tact, cunning, superior geographic position and the shear brutality of the Picts.\u00a0 Fireballs roll from the forest, breaking the line, allowing for Picts to flood in.\u00a0 With madness in their eyes and blood in their hearts, the Picts slice, dice, pierce, decapitate in hand to hand combat and on horseback.\u00a0 The bloodletting is endless. The resulting carnage unfathomable.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8047\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-06-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-06\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-06-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-06-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-06.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But surviving this slaughter is Centurion Quintus Dais and a few other lone soldiers &#8211; some a bit braver than others &#8211; and a captured General.\u00a0 Determined to free Virilius, Dais and company launch a rescue mission, a mission that backfires, sending the Centurions on a flight for their lives.\u00a0 Realizing they must find a way south to return to other Legions, Centurion Dais must first lead his rag tag band of warriors into the northernmost regions of the Inverness and backtrack, hoping against hope to elude the Picts who are hot on their trail with huntress Etain in the lead.\u00a0 Who will survive?\u00a0 Who will avenge?<\/p>\n<p>For most of you, your first introduction to Michael Fassbender was probably in \u201cBrothers in Arms\u201d or \u201cInglorious Bastards.\u201d\u00a0 Seems that being a man in uniform suits Fassbender and here as Centurion Quintus Dais, he never looked better.\u00a0\u00a0 Dynamic, forceful, powerful, he brings a confident life-threatening urgency and emotion to the performance that keeps you on the edge of your seat, making you hold your breath in fear for Dais.\u00a0 Brilliantly done.\u00a0 When I talked to Fassbender right after filming, he raved about the experience.\u00a0 \u201cThis was the hardest I have ever worked in a film, but the most fun I\u2019ve ever had.\u201d\u00a0 And although he \u201cgot to ride horses and play with swords\u201d, Fassbender was very disgruntled that there were many stunts that director Marshall (and the insurance company) wouldn\u2019t let him do. \u201cHe gets a bit carried away sometime.\u00a0 He\u2019s very enthusiastic.\u00a0 He wanted to jump off the cliff into the river.\u00a0 We literally had to hold him back because I\u2019m sure he would have done it.\u00a0 He did everything else himself.\u00a0 He did go in the river and he was running topless through the snow.\u00a0 But we couldn\u2019t let him jump off the cliff.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Axelle Carolyn, who plays Pict warrior Aeron, regales that \u201cFassbender wasn\u2019t allowed to go any faster than trotting and he spent so much time complaining that \u2018I need to gallop, I just need to gallop, I can do it\u2019 that at the end of it they managed to get one day of insurance for him, just for him to go and gallop.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A love fest for Fassbender,\u00a0 Marshall does say, \u201cHe is also incredibly annoying because he is so good at everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8046\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-05-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-05\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-05-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-05-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-05.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The real casting gem is\u00a0 Olga Kurylenko as Etain. She is incredible. For a character who does not speak, Kurylenko spoke enough words with her physical performance to fill the terrain from Rome to Northern Scotland and the farthest western reaches of the Roman Empire. She gives Etain a ferocity that explodes on screen beyond anything I have ever seen, be it with a male or female actor. Ferocious and barbarous.<\/p>\n<p>Dominic West is everything that a Roman general should be.\u00a0 As Virilius, he is strong, rugged, handsome, commanding.\u00a0 I can easily see him standing shoulder to shoulder with Julius Caeser himself.\u00a0 And Marshall looked no further than wife Axelle Carolyn to play Pict warrior Aeron.\u00a0 \u201c I loved the fact that it was something so unusual to do as an actress, to get the opportunity to play something so outrageously brutal and physical.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8045\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-04-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-04\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-04-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-04-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-04.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you grow up in the Northeast of England, your school trips are to Roman forts and Hadrian\u2019s Wall.\u00a0 Roman history all around you.\u201d\u00a0 Add to this a father who is a history nut and a movie buff, and for Marshall, \u201cI guess watching all of that meld into one idea.\u00a0 Finally I heard about the myth of the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Legion.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The authenticity of this film is unbelievable, especially given the low budget.\u00a0 \u201cWe did what we could with what we had.\u00a0 We made sure that if the facts were there, we used them, and in other cases, especially where the Picts were involved having to fill in all the blanks because there\u2019s no recorded history for them.\u201d\u00a0 Axelle Carolyn expounds \u201cthere\u2019s no recorded history for them.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t write or if they did, they wrote on something that hasn\u2019t survived.\u00a0 So all we have is what the Romans told us.\u201d\u00a0 Marshall\u2019s script and the interloping of dialogue and dialect between the archaic and mannered and profane 21st century is genius, evoking the strength and emotion of the time, but adding some light comedic moments when appropriate.\u00a0 Characters are dynamic and true to history and myth but humanized with flaws.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8044\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-03-400x232.png\" alt=\"centurion-03\" width=\"400\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-03-400x232.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-03-600x350.png 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-03-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-03.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instrumental in bringing the epic vastness of CENTURION to life is the cinematography of Sam McCurdy and editing of Chris Gill.\u00a0 Having worked with McCurdy on \u201cThe Descent\u201d, \u201cSam and I were discussing how we were going to shoot this film for at least 2 years before we ever got near making it.\u00a0 We got into discussions should we shoot it on Super 8 or 16mm or digital or whatever and how we were going to make it look.\u00a0 I insisted that we would shoot in the rain, in the snow. This is as a far from filming in a green screen studio as you can get.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Working with\u00a0 intimate introspective moments of characters, McCurdy is then given the freedom of unparalleled expansiveness of shooting in 18 degree weather in the Inverness Mountains to help tell this majestic story resulting in a grandeur and vastness that mirrors Caesar\u2019s own words.\u00a0\u00a0 The imagery is powerful, fueling the energy and survivalist instinct of our Centurions.\u00a0 Like a perfectly blended cup of coffee, Marshall and crew actually conveyed COLD to the point that the visual stirs the physical effect within one, keeping the film grounded and adding a touch to the &#8220;mythological&#8221; lore of the Roman 9th legion and the Picts.\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t want them to have to pretend to shiver.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to distract them from giving me the performance I need.\u00a0 I really wanted them to be cold.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8043\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-02-400x267.png\" alt=\"centurion-02\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-02-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-02-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-02.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although not working prior with Gill, \u201che has a real feel for this.\u00a0 His editing is so extensive.\u00a0 He nailed it.\u201d\u00a0 High praise coming from a director who marks this as the first time he hasn\u2019t edited his own work.\u00a0\u00a0 Editing battle sequences as here is not an easy job and Gill just goes for the jugular, hitting the nail on the head (in more ways than one) every time. A true master of his craft.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, battle choreography was not that difficult.\u00a0 \u201cWhat we struggled against was time and money to have thousands of extras that we would have liked to have had.\u00a0 We only had a couple hundred extras.\u00a0 It was a matter of placing them to fill the frame and make it look like the rest were off camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One has to wonder what Neil Marshall dreams about at night.\u00a0 Several years ago he gave us the wonderfully inventive and frightening \u201cThe Descent\u201d and now with CENTURION he has found more ways of decapitation and blood-letting than you can shake a stick out.\u00a0 PHENOMENAL.\u00a0\u00a0 For Marshall, \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge to come up with new ways of dispatching people.\u00a0 And when I was filming, I was out to make it more interesting.\u00a0 I have a lot of fun with that.\u201d\u00a0 What most don\u2019t know is that the Romans themselves were very brutal killers, something that Marshall \u201cwanted to be very honest about with this film.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to hold back.\u00a0 And I like the idea that the Romans and the Picts were about as brutal as the other but were also capable of heroic deeds as well.\u00a0 Some it was constructing it as you go along.\u00a0 I think the first kill that I make is the guy ringing the bell, and I had this idea that I\u2019d like to see the guy get shot in the back of the head with the arrow while ringing the bell. That came out organically as we were shooting it.\u201d\u00a0 Another favorite idea of Marshall\u2019s emerged during the editing process.\u00a0 \u201cBecause it was at night, we could have flaming arrows and all these sparks fly off and it looks great.\u201d\u00a0 According to wife Carolyn, \u201cI\u2019m sure he would have had some human torches if he could have.\u201d\u00a0 One of my personal faves is a sequence involving a row of decapitated heads on spears which, as it turns out, are heads of actors in Marshall\u2019s previous films.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8042\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-01-400x265.png\" alt=\"centurion-01\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-01-400x265.png 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-01-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/centurion-01.png 834w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kudos to prosthetic designer Paul Hyett who went through 200 liters of blood during filming and countless \u201cheads and body parts\u201d.\u00a0 \u201c[He] has this truck full of bits and body parts and heads that he cast for previous films.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And as for make-up, that of the Picts is stunning.\u00a0 Just think Klingons on Earth.\u00a0 And with the intention of the make-up was to make the Picts look fierce, according to Carolyn, \u201cI felt like the Predator.\u00a0 I loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The icing on the cake, Ilan Eshkeri&#8217;s score catapults the film to an even higher level of excellence.<\/p>\n<p>CENTURION.\u00a0 Riveting.\u00a0 Pulsating.\u00a0 An action packed Roman thrill ride from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Quintais Dais &#8211; Michael Fassbender<\/p>\n<p>General Virilius &#8211; Dominic West<\/p>\n<p>Etain &#8211; Olga Kurylenko<\/p>\n<p>Written and directed by Neil Marshall<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias The Ninth Roman Legion is legendary.\u00a0 Their bravery.\u00a0 Their brutality.\u00a0 Their superiority.\u00a0 A true fighting machine with cunning and strength.\u00a0\u00a0 Centurions all.\u00a0 Raised in 65 BC in Spain, Julius Caesar\u00a0first commanded the Legion in 61BC, bringing them to Gaul in several years later when they were a commanding presence during the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8049,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,9],"tags":[713,1148],"class_list":["post-8038","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-movies","category-reviews","tag-action-adventure","tag-centurion"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.5 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
