As his lifelong friend Carole Cook<\/a> notes, it\u2019s \u201cshowing a lot of class\u201d when one watches TCM and her pal Robert Osborne, and equally so when Robert Osborne joins her on May 10th at the 30th Annual S.T.A.G.E. Goes to the Movies<\/strong><\/a> to benefit APLA.\u00a0 In Cook\u2019s eyes, \u201cIt\u2019s all about Bob Osborne\u201d no matter what the case.\u00a0 \u201c TCM and Bob have taken [classic movies] to a new height.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Robert<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a love fest and friendship between Robert Osborne and Carole Cook that transcends movies, although it starts with movies, and most notably now, TCM.\u00a0 According to Cook, \u201c[When Bob first started,\u00a0 and he always laughs at this so I\u2019m not telling out of school – at that time, our dream was for Bob to be the curator of one day, \u2018The Hollywood Museum\u2019<\/em>.\u00a0 I mean a big new museum.\u00a0 It\u2019s just terrible that Hollywood doesn\u2019t have a mammoth museum to preserve and showcase its movies and the movie industry.\u201d\u00a0 Thankfully, one is finally being built, much to everyone\u2019s joy, but 45 years ago, there was nothing.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d say, \u2018Bob, we\u2019ve got to get a big museum.\u00a0 This is the home of movies.\u2019\u00a0 I know movies started in New Jersey and all that, but people think of Hollywood as films. . .\u00a0 I always told Bob our dream was for Bob to become the curator of \u2018The Hollywood Museum\u2019<\/em> when it was built.. . Well, I will say, \u2018Bob you outdid our dreams.\u00a0 You took a lot of information and made a career out of it with TCM.\u2019\u201d And as Cook giddily notes, \u201cHe laughs.\u00a0 He always says, \u2018Carole Cook says I took a bunch of information that nobody knew what to do with and made a career.\u2019\u00a0 And a good one, may I add.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood one\u201d is an understatement as 20 years later just look what TCM has become.\u00a0\u00a0 Fans around the globe gather in front of their tv\u2019s and now on social media apps, talking and celebrating movies, while TCM Classic Film Festival has become one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood!\u00a0 Having just wrapped TCM Film Festival 2014, fans are clamoring for information on at least the dates for the 2015 festival.\u00a0 On gentle prodding, Osborne notes, \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019ve set them.\u00a0 As a matter of fact I\u2019m having dinner with Charlie Tabesh [TCM programmer] in a couple of weeks and one of the things is that he\u2019s hoping to have a date for the festival at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n

What many don\u2019t realize is the logistics involved in putting together a festival like TCM.\u00a0 Expounding, Osborne explains some of the moving parts of the endeavor.\u00a0 \u201c[I]t depends not only on Turner\u2019s schedule, but basically on when they can get the Chinese Theatre, when they can get the Egyptian Theatre, the El Capitan now is on the list, and the others, and also to make sure that there\u2019s not some big convention so that many of the rooms in the Loews and the Hollywood Roosevelt are not taken.\u00a0 It\u2019s coordinating all that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But for Robert Osborne, one of the greatest joys with TCM is that the fans know they are getting quality – quality films, quality festival, quality programming.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re very lucky because now we\u2019re selling out [TCMFF] before we even announce any of the films or any of the celebrities that are going to be attending.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great compliment.\u00a0 It\u2019s also wonderful for Charlie Tabesh because it means that he doesn\u2019t have to book movie titles that are marquis names to pull people in; that people will know that if he\u2019s booked it, it\u2019s gonna be something they\u2019ll want to see or that they should see.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s only been a short five years since TCM Classic Film Festival was launched but in that short amount of time, the word has spread, so much so that fans the world over are requesting themes, or celebrations of character actors or those deserving\u00a0 \u201csecond look\u201d films.\u00a0 \u201c[B]efore that, when you\u2019re trying to get people to come to the festival, you had\u00a0 to book titles that they know and they therefore will come and see.\u00a0 You can\u2019t have a whole program of Hobson\u2019s Choice<\/em> and obscure little movies and get them excited.\u00a0 You had to have the Casablanca<\/em> and Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em> and that kind of stuff.\u00a0 But now [the fans] know that if we\u2019re showing it, it\u2019s gonna be something they\u2019re gonna want to see so the titles can be much more obscure, which is great.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2015 TCM Classic Film Festival \u201cwish list\u201d has already begun\u201d with beach party movies being requested, especially since Jimmy \u201cMoondoggie\u201d Darren has said he\u2019s coming to TCMFF 2015, or tributes to character actors like Mary Boland, Harry Davenport or Charles Lane.<\/p>\n

Osborne lights up even more when hearing things like this and you can almost hear the wheels turning with his own ideas.\u00a0 \u201cI think that\u2019s a great idea. . .\u00a0 The great thing about it is that you\u2019ve got Fred and Ginger.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got Quentin Tarantino.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got Sergio Leone.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got George Cukor.\u00a0 You can give everybody a taste of whatever they want but you can\u2019t overdo any of it or then you\u2019re in trouble. . .You really have to have something that\u2019s going to please everybody.\u201d\u00a0 Notable is that \u201cTCM gets requests from all over the country.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m sure that as many as you get about James Darren and a beach movie, they get just as many for Quentin Tarantino movies.\u00a0 That\u2019s the wonderful thing.\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s got something different that they\u2019re passionate about.\u00a0 It\u2019s what makes movie-going great.\u00a0 There\u2019s so many different kinds of movies. . . I think it\u2019s great to just have this wonderful mix.\u201d<\/p>\n
