Hooker\u2019s right hand Officer Jim Corrigan or the smooth and swingin\u2019 Vic Fontaine or even Philadelphia\u2019s own James Ercolani, we all know him best as Jimmy Darren.\u00a0 A legend in tv both in front of and behind the camera, a film star and a globally lauded and loved recording star, Jimmy Darren takes the stage in Beverly Hills on May 10th as part of the <strong>30th Annual\u00a0 S.T.A.G.E. Goes to the Movies<\/strong> for the benefit of AIDS and Aids Project LA.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-822\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/stage-jimmy-darren-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"stage - jimmy darren\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/stage-jimmy-darren-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/stage-jimmy-darren.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joining such luminaries as Mitzi Gaynor, Carole Cook, Mary Wilson and, of course, everyone\u2019s favorite TCM host and film historian Robert Osborne, Darren will \u201cdo something from GIDGET.\u00a0 There\u2019s two songs I sang in GIDGET.\u00a0 I open it with a portion of <em>There\u2019s No Such Thing<\/em> which is a terrific song and then go into the song <em>Gidget<\/em> which is another terrific song.\u201d\u00a0 And here\u2019s a bit of trivia for you from Jimmy Darren, \u201c When I recorded them, Billy May did both their [composing] charts and they\u2019re beautiful.\u00a0 We recorded them at Capitol with John Williams conducting. . . But back then he was \u2018Johnny\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 Johnny Williams?\u00a0 Who knew!<\/p>\n<p>Talking with Jimmy Darren is its own stage show as he takes you along on a trip down memory lane as he lovingly, and often laughingly, recalls some of the highlights of his own storied career, starting with his name.\u00a0 Although born James Ercolani, it didn\u2019t take long before he quickly became known as Jimmy Darren.\u00a0 And folks, you better call him Jimmy.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t call me James.\u00a0 I just couldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I mean, I love my name, it\u2019s my grandfather\u2019s name but I wouldn\u2019t like that.\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t like \u2018Jim\u2019 but I like \u2018Jimmy\u201d\u2019. . . . Jimmy Stewart was always Jimmy.\u00a0 Everybody called him Jimmy Stewart.\u00a0 And that\u2019s good company to be in.\u201d\u00a0 Interestingly, the name game was a result of marketing by Columbia Pictures.\u00a0 \u201cAt Columbia they thought that \u2018James\u2019 was a bit formal to put on a record so they used \u2018Jimmy\u2019 and on screen for films they used \u2018James\u2019.\u00a0 But it confused people.\u00a0 So they finally, I think, started putting James Darren on the records as well.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make too much sense.\u201d\u00a0 Confused the public as well it seems as Darren recalled a scenario that played out quite often over the years when approached by fans.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018Jimmy Darren and James Darren?\u00a0 Not Bobby now.\u00a0 But Jimmy Darren.\u00a0 Are you related to James Darren?\u2019\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u2018No.\u00a0 I am James Darren.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018But it says Jimmy Darren here on the record.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018Yea, I know that, but I am that guy.\u2019. . .\u00a0 It would confuse them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-823\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-hooker.jpg\" alt=\"jimmy darren - hooker\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-hooker.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-hooker-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Excited about seeing Robert Osborne host <strong>S.T.A.G.E. Goes to the Movies<\/strong>, Darren\u2019s attention buoys even higher with his enthusiasm for TCM and the movies.\u00a0 Exhilarating and uncontainable, especially when it sparks personal memories of legends whom he admired, Darren quickly chimes in, \u201cI watch that channel all the time, and I mean ALL the time.\u00a0 I watched THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE last night with John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin, who I absolutely love.\u00a0 He was the craziest guy.\u00a0 My God he was nuts but he was a wonderful actor.\u00a0 He was a wonderful actor.\u00a0 He was so good.\u201d\u00a0 Speaking during TCM\u2019s week long tribute to John Wayne, Darren\u2019s excitement for &#8220;The Duke&#8221; is unabashed.\u00a0 \u201cI love RED RIVER.\u00a0 I was a big Monty Cliff fan, too.\u00a0 He was like the premiere actor, this guy.\u00a0 He was a lesson for everybody.\u201d\u00a0 But the fun quickly comes as Darren recalls meeting John Wayne himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met John Wayne at Sy Devore, oddly enough.\u00a0 Sy had fitted me for whatever, Sy himself because he would always be there with the tailor, and I came downstairs and there was John Wayne.\u00a0 I looked up and I almost wet my pants.\u00a0 I said, \u2018Oh my God!\u2019\u00a0 And I said hi and I introduced myself.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure he didn\u2019t know who I was or care [laughing] but he was polite, he was sweet and it was really a thrill to have met him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One wouldn\u2019t think of a star like Jimmy Darren as being \u201cstar struck\u201d after all these years, but even he still gets excited, and a bit amazed, at some of his fans, like \u201cThe Boss\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cI was up at Beverly Center with my friend\u00a0 Larry Goldman, this is 2-3 years back, and Bruce Springsteen &#8211; I hear this motorcycle and I ride motorcycles so I\u2019m curious &#8211; and this man gets off the bike and Bruce Springsteen walks in.\u00a0 So I told Larry, \u2018I gotta say hi to this guy because I\u2019m a big fan.\u2019 I walked up to him and said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to bug you.\u00a0 My name is Jimmy Darren and I just want to tell you I love your stuff.\u2019\u00a0 He said, &#8216;<em>Goodbye Cruel World<\/em>.\u00a0 I bought it in Freehold, New Jersey.\u2019\u00a0 And now my friend Bobby Ross married Bruce\u2019s sister.\u00a0 He calls me about a year later and says, \u2018I\u2019m going through Bruce\u2019s 45&#8217;s.\u00a0 I found your record.\u00a0 I found <em>Goodbye Cruel World<\/em>.\u2019\u00a0 Is that funny!\u201d\u00a0 And there\u2019s Elton John.\u00a0 \u201cElton John came out of Tower Records, I\u2019m going back about 4-5 years now, he comes out and says to my son, \u2018I just bought your dad\u2019s <em>The Best of Jimmy Darren<\/em>, his CD.\u2019\u00a0 I thought, &#8216;Jesus!\u00a0 Bruce Springsteen bought my record, Elton John.\u00a0 Pretty cool.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-824\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-362x300.jpg\" alt=\"jimmy darren - gidget\" width=\"362\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-362x300.jpg 362w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But since we\u2019re also talking about <strong>S.T.A.G.E. Goes to the Movies<\/strong>, does Darren have any favorite or most memorable acting performance of his? \u201cHmmmm.\u00a0 That\u2019s tough. There were special moments working with Shelley Winters and Burl Ives and Jean Seberg, of course, in LET NO MAN WRITE MY EPITAPH.\u00a0\u00a0 Martin Scorsese told my son Christian that\u2019s one of his favorite movies.\u00a0 And of course, GIDGET with Sandra [Dee].\u00a0 There are scenes I can think of, particular scenes with Sandy when I was up sitting on a rock and she brought me a hamburger or something.\u00a0 I remember that.\u00a0 That was a very special moment.\u00a0 And of course, NAVARONE.\u00a0 In\u00a0 NAVARONE I worked with the giants, with Peck and Niven and Quinn and Stanley Baker and Anthony Quail.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I could take one moment because I feel that I would be unfair to the other two or three. . .There are moments in that whole film that I absolutely love.\u00a0 There\u2019s a moment in GIDGET that I absolutely love and remember vividly, and in EPITAPH as well.\u00a0 But,\u00a0 I can\u2019t think of one thing as myself as an actor that really tops everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Darren is hard pressed to pick a favorite acting performance, when it comes to music, there\u2019s no hesitation.\u00a0 \u201cA favorite album that I did was with Stu Phillips who did\u00a0<em> Goodbye Cruel World<\/em> and <em>Her Royal Majesty<\/em>, and who talked me into Goodbye Cruel World\u00a0 because I didn\u2019t want to do it, was called <em>Love Among the Elms<\/em>.\u00a0 It was the best album I\u2019d ever done.\u00a0 Ever.\u00a0 Ever.\u00a0 Those songs like, <em>You Make Me Feel So Young, Young At Heart<\/em> &#8211; that was the best I\u2019d ever done.\u201d\u00a0 And for Jimmy Darren it\u2019s all about memories.\u00a0 \u201c[M]ore than the talent on the records, if there is much, it\u2019s memories.\u00a0 For me, if I think about some of the stuff I recorded like <em>Goodbye Cruel World<\/em> or <em>Her Royal Majesty<\/em>, stuff like that, I cringe.\u00a0 People say, \u201cIt\u2019s a good record\u201d but I don\u2019t like it. . . I feel I sing so much better today than I ever sang then.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-825\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-2.jpg\" alt=\"jimmy darren - gidget - 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-gidget-2-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Never losing the \u201cwow\u201d factor of life, Darren lovingly reminisces about Frank Sinatra.\u00a0 \u201cMy relationship with the Sinatra family and with Frank, no matter where I\u2019d see him or when I\u2019d be with him, and I\u2019d spend a lot of time with him, it was always \u2018wow\u2019.\u00a0 I was on the set everyday with him on PAL JOEY, everyday when I was at Columbia.\u00a0 But after that, the relationship went on for years and years.\u00a0 I\u2019m godfather to his first grandchild, Nancy\u2019s daughter AJ.\u00a0 My wife and I are godparents to her.\u00a0 Just that and in the church with Frank, and all his friends, with Dean and those people; the church on Lankershim and Moorpark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting when you talk about how you don\u2019t lose that wow factor.\u00a0 It\u2019s so true.\u00a0 I sometimes have to pinch myself to say, \u2018Am I really here with so and so or am I really talking to this person?\u2019\u00a0 And even when you become friends, like with Anthony Quinn.\u00a0 He and I, when we were doing THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, he\u2019d say to me, \u2018You want to go to Rome for the weekend?\u2019 And I\u2019d say, \u2018Okay.\u00a0 What the hell.\u201d\u00a0 And we\u2019d go and we\u2019d live together in this house.\u00a0 When I think back on it, it\u2019s like it was a dream.\u00a0 It\u2019s surreal.\u00a0 You kind of lose the reality that they\u2019re people.\u00a0 They have such a great presence that when that happens to you and you\u2019re sitting there it\u2019s like this great person that you see on a screen who\u2019s 20 times the size of a normal human being is coming and hugging you, when that\u2019s happening you don\u2019t think of them as a person, a regular person, even though they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Jimmy Darren has a whole new generation of fans thanks to <em>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine<\/em>.\u00a0 Initially turning down the role three times before being cast 50&#8217;s era lounge singer Vic Fontaine, Darren is quick to credit executive producer Ira Behr for this career resurgence, all thanks to a script that \u201cwas written so beautifully, I read it and I fell in love with it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And as fans of the franchise can attest, no stone is left unturned when it comes to high levels of production values and attention to details both on the big and small screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-826\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-vic-fontaine-393x300.jpg\" alt=\"jimmy darren - vic fontaine\" width=\"393\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-vic-fontaine-393x300.jpg 393w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-vic-fontaine-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-vic-fontaine.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Darren recalls, \u201cThey had this beautiful set for me which was Vic\u2019s Place, Vic\u2019s Club, and when I would be up there singing there would be a relatively medium or tight shot, all the crew would be around.\u00a0 I\u2019d be performing for the crew. It was great. . .My first day on that set, I felt so welcome [it was like] I had been there from Day One.\u201d\u00a0 Because Vic Fontaine and his holographic club was set in the Rat Pack era, Ira Behr wanted authenticity and started by asking Darren where his tuxedos were made back in the 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 \u201cWell, 50&#8217;s, 60&#8217;s, 70&#8217;s, Sy Devore.\u201d\u00a0 Expounding, Darren notes, \u201c[Behr] went to Sy Devore and they still had my pattern.\u00a0 They made my tuxedo.\u00a0 Then he said, \u2018Where\u2019d you have your shirts made?\u2019 . . .[I]t was Anton who later bought [the shirtmaker shop] and Ira went to them and they had my pattern because I still have shirts made there.\u00a0 And he got everything that was from the 50&#8217;s.\u00a0 The exact same thing.\u00a0 My tuxedo was a 50&#8217;s tuxedo.\u00a0 My shirts were what I had made in the 50&#8217;s. Pretty cool.\u201d\u00a0 But beyond cool were Darren\u2019s shoes which he wore in every episode of \u201cDeep Space Nine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a guy.\u00a0 His name was DiFrabrizio.\u00a0 And DiFabrizio was a shoemaker, literally a shoemaker.\u00a0 He made Sinatra\u2019s shoes, Dean Martin\u2019s shoes, Sammy\u2019s [Davis] shoes, Tony Orlando\u2019s shoes &#8211; everybody you can probably mention had custom shoes made by him.\u00a0 I was in there one day and he said to me in his broken English, he said, \u2018I have a pair of Dean Martin\u2019s shoes here.\u00a0 He\u2019s the same size as you.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show them to you.\u00a0 If you like them, you can have them because Dean wore them a bit but he wasn\u2019t crazy about them.\u2019\u00a0 So he brought them out and I looked at them.\u00a0 \u2018Oh, DiFabrizio!\u00a0 I love these shoes.\u00a0 I love them!\u2019\u00a0 They were the ugliest shoes you\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 They were so ugly! [laughing] But I told him, \u2018Oh, I love them!\u00a0 They\u2019re gorgeous shoes!\u2019, because I wanted them.\u00a0 I wore those shoes in every single scene in <em>Star Trek.<\/em>\u00a0 Dean Martin\u2019s shoes.\u00a0 Every single scene.\u201d\u00a0 Interestingly, Darren hadn\u2019t \u201cworked in too many productions where they had done that and tried to be really true to the era, but Ira, boy, he was a real stickler about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-827\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-album.jpg\" alt=\"jimmy darren - album\" width=\"280\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-album.jpg 280w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-album-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-album-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/jimmy-darren-album-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But beyond <em>Deep Space Nine<\/em>, Jimmy Darren went back into the recording studio.\u00a0 \u201cGlenn Barros, who is the President of Concord Jazz Records, which is a beautiful label, a great label, was a Trekkie.\u00a0 And coming on the show, I got a record contract from it!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Back in the studio now, Darren is working on a new album with a Latin flair.\u00a0 \u201cBossa Nova and stuff like that.\u00a0 But it\u2019s one with a more contemporary feel.\u00a0 It\u2019s traditional basically because you wouldn\u2019t want to get away from that . . .but it has a lot of today\u2019s feel and sound is more contemporary.\u00a0 Kind of more modern Brazilian or Cuban feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Jimmy Darren plans on being around performing and entertaining for a long time to come.\u00a0 \u201cOnce I get on that stage, I\u2019m in heaven.\u00a0 I really am.\u00a0 \u2018I&#8217;m just in my glory.\u00a0 I\u2019m a ham!\u00a0 That\u2019s the bottom line.\u00a0 I was born a ham and I\u2019ll always be.\u00a0 I never think about giving it up because I like the performing so much.\u201d\u00a0 Which come May 10th, is a good thing for AIDS and <strong>S.T.A.G.E. Goes to the Movies.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still the same humble boy from the City of Brotherly Love, devoted to family and friends and those in need, Darren eloquently summarizes why he gets involved with <strong>S.T.A.G.E.<\/strong> and why he keeps returning.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re helping other people, doing things that will benefit other people; people who are maybe not really accepted like they should be. . . Did you see the Matthew McConaughey movie?\u00a0 If it wasn\u2019t for that guy, what the hell would be happening now? . . . People say to me, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re for gay rights.\u2019\u00a0 I say, \u2018I\u2019m for human rights.\u2019\u00a0 I don\u2019t believe we should single out somebody.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care what you are &#8211; straight, gay, black, blue, green &#8211; it\u2019s human rights.\u00a0 We should all be one people. . . We should treat them and care for them because they\u2019re people.\u00a0 And gay marriage?\u00a0 I\u2019m totally for it. . .They\u2019re two people that love each other and that\u2019s all that matters.\u00a0 Two people that love each other.\u00a0 It\u2019s their choice and we should celebrate it and enjoy it with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re all gonna be doing a lot of celebrating on May 10th when\u00a0 S.T.A.G.E.
