{"id":8723,"date":"2010-08-12T02:41:30","date_gmt":"2010-08-12T09:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=8723"},"modified":"2014-10-23T13:45:19","modified_gmt":"2014-10-23T20:45:19","slug":"confession-of-a-shopaholic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/confession-of-a-shopaholic\/","title":{"rendered":"Confession of a Shopaholic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8732\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Shopaholic_Poster-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"Shopaholic_Poster\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Shopaholic_Poster-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Shopaholic_Poster.jpg 273w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>When Sophie Kinsella\u2019s most entertaining novel \u201cConfessions of a Shopaholic\u201d hit bookstores several years ago, I ran to grab my copy.\u00a0 After all, I had grown up with the queen of shopaholism &#8211; my mother (if it comes in 10 colors, buy all 10 colors and then accessories, jewelry, shoes and handbags to match &#8211; and all from the \u201celitest\u201d stores in Center City Philadelphia or on the Main Line, the Prada and Gucci of her generation.\u00a0 The woman even had a shoe wall with some 400 pairs of shoes at its peak.\u00a0 And based on stories of her youth, compounded by what I saw and knew, I think she was the poster child for the term.)\u00a0 Capturing the very essence and intimate details of this well known concept, I was completely enamored with Kinsella\u2019s story which embraced today\u2019s obsession with youth, beauty, fashion and shopping with the glorious use of seemingly endless credit.\u00a0\u00a0 The book was like a fairy tale for shoppers everywhere but it went a step further, with an actual message and a balance of characters that reflected the good, the bad and the ugly of this \u201cdisease\u201d, with a little romance and fun thrown in for good measure.\u00a0\u00a0 But my greater joy came when I learned that the book (now a series) was being made into a film and that PJ Hogan would be directing.\u00a0 Showing the strength of Kinsella\u2019s material and characters, Jerry Bruckheimer, master of testosterone, action adventure and intrigue, even stepped into this new territory of romantic comedy as producer.\u00a0 It seemed inevitable that with Hogan, a master of comedy, romance and let\u2019s face it &#8211; fun &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 as evidenced by \u201cMuriel\u2019s Wedding\u201d and \u201cMy Best Friend\u2019s Wedding\u201d, as director, Bruckheimer as a producer, a dream cast and the incredible talents of costume designer Patricia Field and Kristi Zea\u2019s production design, CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC would not only be a visual delight but fun-filled.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And now, after screening the film, I have to say, the end\u00a0 result exceeds my expectations and anticipation.\u00a0 CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC is a kaleidoscopic confection of comedy and couture on credit.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8726\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101321-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101321\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101321-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101321-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101321.jpg 602w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Bloomwood is your average 20-something wanting to make her mark in the world.\u00a0\u00a0 A wannabe journalist, she has her sights, and her wallet, set on fashion &#8211; wearing it, buying it, writing about it.\u00a0 Problem is, she can\u2019t get her dream job because she has no experience and she doesn\u2019t want to compromise her dream and settle for anything less than what she wants.\u00a0 (Just like in her shopping).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bigger problem is she has no job but thanks to her spending habits, has credit card debt up the wazoo.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But, for Rebecca, it seems things always have a way of working out.\u00a0 And this time it all starts with an alcohol-inspired evening with her best friend and roommate Suze.\u00a0 Intent on helping Becky with her shopping problem, Suze intervenes.\u00a0 Intent on helping Becky land a job, Suze intervenes.\u00a0 And thanks to some inebriated writing and a comedy of mailing errors, Becky does land a job &#8211; writing for a financial magazine. The irony of that alone is enough to fill you with snickers and giggles. The good news though is that the financial magazine is owned by the same company that owns Alette, the fashion magazine for whom Becky wants to work.\u00a0\u00a0 But for Becky, the best news, although herself blind to it, is an editor who sees talent and heart behind her shopaholic fashion-oriented ways. . .and he looks mighty fine to boot.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8727\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101333-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101333\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101333-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101333-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101333.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Serendipitous comedic adventure presents itself at every turn as Becky forges ahead in the world, making a name for herself as \u201cThe Girl With the Green Scarf\u201d, winning fans, friends and notoriety but hitting a few bargain basement stumbling blocks along the way that may cost her more than any piece of couture.\u00a0\u00a0 And hot on her heels is the every present debt collector.<\/p>\n<p>The casting of this film is impeccable.\u00a0\u00a0 Isla Fisher, whose talents I greatly admire (just check her out in Scott Frank\u2019s \u201cThe Lookout\u201d), is adorable as Rebecca Bloomwood.\u00a0 Her bouncy, perky, spunky, doe-eyed innocence illuminates the screen and creates a great affectation for the character.\u00a0\u00a0 But then Fisher zings you with an air of authority and intelligence that is the perfect balance to the \u201cfluff.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I said this story was like a fairy tale, so who better to play Becky Bloomwood\u2019s \u201cprince\u201d than a former Prince Charming, Hugh Dancy.\u00a0\u00a0 As Becky\u2019s boss Luke Brandon, Dancy has a natural ease and charm about him that is welcoming, disarming and adds a warmth to his character and every scene.\u00a0 His chemistry with Fisher is undeniable and never moreso than in a semi-ad-libbed dance scene set in Palm Beach, Florida.\u00a0 And yes folks, the \u201ccreativity\u201d of the dance moves by Fisher is all her.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Krysten Ritter is an explosion of joyous effervescence as Becky\u2019s best friend and conscience, Suze.\u00a0 A fan of the \u201cShopaholic\u201d books before even being considered for the film, this role is a labor of love and it shows in her performance.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8728\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101348-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101348\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101348-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101348-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101348.jpg 602w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The free gift with purchase in this film is the supporting cast.\u00a0 According to PJ Hogan, \u201cI was very lucky.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 John Goodman and Joan Cusack are perfect as Becky\u2019s frugal, thrift store shopping parents.\u00a0 They provide a grounding and sensibility to the story that keeps it from flying into the clouds of Never Never Land.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c[They] were my first choices for their parts and it\u2019s not often a director gets his first choice.\u00a0 Luckily, they responded to the material and said yes.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For me, one of the most inspired casting choices is Wendie Malick.\u00a0 Best known for her role as over-the-hill-has-been but always a fashion icon model, Nina Van Horn, from \u201cJust Shoot Me\u201d, as Shopaholics Anonymous group leader Miss Korch, she is the antithesis of Nina and an absolute riot.\u00a0 For Hogan, \u201cI just love Wendie Malick.\u00a0 I am a big fan of her work.\u201d\u00a0 Key to other signature casting of Kristin Scott Thomas (who is deliciously over the top as magazine editor Alette), John Lithgow and Leslie Bibb, is Hogan himself.\u00a0 \u201cI am a director who encourages invention.\u00a0 I like to cast good people and then let them do their thing.\u00a0 Wendie, Kristin Scott Thomas, John Lithgow &#8211; I am open to ideas and your take on the part.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the reasons that they agreed to do the roles.\u00a0 I was offering a collaboration.\u201d\u00a0 When it comes to Kristin Scott Thomas, the admiration is mutual as \u201cPJ allows you to be quite brave.\u201d\u00a0 And keep your eyes peeled for a hysterical cameo by Lynn Redgrave, who has now appeared in 3 of Hogan\u2019s films.\u00a0 She will have you in stitches.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8729\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101401-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101401\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101401-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101401.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I asked Kinsella about the genesis of \u201cShopaholic\u201d. \u201cI was actually in a shop when the idea came to me.\u00a0 The initial inspiration was the VISA bill scene which appears in the movie.\u00a0 It was the beginning of her character.\u00a0 I could see the comedy of shopping.\u00a0 This character came into my head as a girl who shops too much and all the situations she could get into.\u00a0 I just had so much fun with it that I just couldn\u2019t stop.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And although Kinsella was present on the set, it fell to Tracey Jackson, Kayla Alpert and Tim Firth to adapt the novel(s) to the big screen, the first challenge of which was moving the setting from London to New York.\u00a0 As it happens, book two is \u201cShopaholic Takes Manhattan\u201d which allowed elements of that book to be tied into this story.\u00a0 Characters remain true to the novel but thanks to Hogan\u2019s direction and the visual design elements of Patricia Fields and Kristi Zea, are now larger than life, more connectable, touchable.<\/p>\n<p>As for the script itself, Hogan candidly admits there was \u201ca lot of ad-libbing, a lot of changing.\u00a0 I am a big believer, particularly with comedy, keeping things fresh and alive in front of the camera.\u00a0 I like to improvise when I work but only if my scene is strong.\u00a0 If an idea takes off, you have a better scene.\u00a0 You have a scene that feels alive and has a fluidity.\u201d\u2028\u00a0\u2028Key to SHOPAHOLIC are the locations and the clothes. There is no one better in couture costuming than Patricia Field and no better production designer for a New York setting than Kristi Zea.\u00a0 And although one might think boutiques and stores like Saks, Catherine Malandrino, Barney\u2019s and Bendel\u2019s would jump at the chance to have their stores featured in the film, such wasn\u2019t the case (although each of these is prominently featured.)\u00a0 As PJ Hogan described it to me, \u201cThere\u2019s a courtship involved.\u00a0 We had one big advantage and that was the books.\u00a0 In one of the books, I think \u201cShopaholic Takes Manhattan\u201d, Sophie [Kinsella] actually set a sequence in Barney\u2019s.\u00a0 So Barney\u2019s knew the books well because they were in the books.\u00a0 Some stores did not want to be associated with a film about shopaholism and some stores had a great sense of humor about it.\u00a0 Usually if the people who made decisions had read the books, they were on, because they knew how much fun the books were.\u00a0 If they hadn\u2019t read the books, they were a little scared of the title, I think.\u00a0 Shopaholism.\u00a0 Credit Cards.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8730\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101414-206x300.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101414\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101414-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101414.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And while there are a few sluggish scenes, they are not that noticable thanks to the eye-popping confectionary fashion pallettes that keep your senses stimulated and characters and dialogue that are fueled with irony, double-entendres, comedy and heart.<\/p>\n<p>As for PJ Hogan\u2019s wish for this film, \u201cI would like the audience to just have a really good time.\u00a0 We\u2019re in a time where we need a laugh.\u00a0 I think the subject matter speaks for itself.\u00a0 That\u2019s what drew me to the story.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in trouble with finances.\u00a0 I bought things that I couldn\u2019t afford.\u00a0 But what I loved about the books was that it acknowledged all of that, offered hope and also gave you a really good time.\u00a0 I try to make films that I myself would like to see and right now in my life, I wanted a good time.\u00a0 I want people to forget about their troubles and have a good time.\u00a0 Have a laugh.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8731\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101809-400x244.jpg\" alt=\"2009-02-11_101809\" width=\"400\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101809-400x244.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101809-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-02-11_101809.jpg 531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC.\u00a0 It will make you laugh.\u00a0 It will make you cry.\u00a0 It will make you glad those credit card bills are Becky Bloomwood\u2019s and not yours.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Bloomwood &#8211; Isla Fisher\u2028Luke Brandon &#8211; Hugh Dancy\u2028Suze &#8211; Krysten Ritter<\/p>\n<p>Directed by PJ Hogan.\u00a0 Written by Tracey Jackson, Kayla Alpert and Tim Firth based on the books \u201cConfession of a Shopaholic\u201d by Sophie Kinsella.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias When Sophie Kinsella\u2019s most entertaining novel \u201cConfessions of a Shopaholic\u201d hit bookstores several years ago, I ran to grab my copy.\u00a0 After all, I had grown up with the queen of shopaholism &#8211; my mother (if it comes in 10 colors, buy all 10 colors and then accessories, jewelry, shoes and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":8727,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,9],"tags":[1251],"class_list":["post-8723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-movies","category-reviews","tag-confession-of-a-shopaholic"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.5 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
