The only thing one ever need know when they see the name \u201cMatthew McConaughey\u201d on a movie\u2019s titles or on the theater marquis is that his performance will be first-rate.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t matter the genre, the director, the screenwriter, the remaining cast; with McConaughey attached you are assured quality.<\/p>\n

\"spirit<\/p>\n

2012 was a particularly banner year for Matthew McConaughey thanks to Magic Mike, Killer Joe<\/em> and The Paperboy<\/em>. Nominated for, among others, a Film Independent Spirit Award as Best Male Lead for his performance in Killer Joe<\/em>, he was also nominated for – and won – the Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male for his sizzling work as \u201cDallas\u201d in Magic Mike<\/em>.\u00a0 Chatting together after his Spirit Award win early in 2013,\u00a0 he teased me with what 2013 would herald.\u00a0 \u201cHopefully the run continues.\u00a0 Wait till you see what\u2019s coming up this year!\u00a0 I\u2019m really proud of the work.\u201d\u00a0 Having now seen his 2013 endeavors,\u00a0 Mud, Dallas Buyers Club<\/em> and The Wolf of Wall Stree<\/em>t, McConaughey has every right to be proud as each performance is as good, if not better, than the next.<\/p>\n

Catching up with him on the press circuit for Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>, we talked about not only DBC<\/em> but Mud,<\/em> an indie gem that is, in a word, magnificent.\u00a0\u00a0 I knew then that McConaughey is so strong in both films, and so diverse with the extremes of character, that come awards season, his name would again be bandied about for accolades and, with the Film Independent Spirit Awards, undoubtedly a double nominee again.\u00a0 As we now know, that is just what happened as McConaughey is not only nominated for and already awarded multiple critics\u2019 awards and is an anticipated Oscar nominee, but he has again snagged himself\u00a0 Spirit Award accolades, nominated for Best Male Lead for Dallas Buyers Club<\/em> and also as part of the ensemble named as winners\/recipients of the Robert Altman Award for Mud<\/em>.<\/p>\n

According to McConaughey, \u201cThey were going to put Mud<\/em> out last year but they held onto it and I\u2019m glad they did. . . There are more people on the street so to speak that come up and have the most sincere love relationship with that movie.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s something that takes people back to a really good spot with that.\u00a0 When I first saw it, I was like, \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of movie that would have been a wide release in 1986.\u201d\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 It kind of felt like the thing you went to the mall to see.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 I\u2019m really honored by that movie.\u00a0 I love that film and that story, and I love that character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Mud<\/p>\n

Shooting Mud<\/em> only ten days after coming off Magic Mike<\/em>, \u201cI was like, \u2018How do I go from that guy Dallas to playing Mud? because they\u2019re very different.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Tapping into similar threads of the characters helped the transition.\u00a0 \u201cThe one aspect that\u2019s the same is they\u2019re both dreamers because, if you remember, Dallas in Magic Mike<\/em>, he lived on Neptune.\u00a0 And then Mud, I was always like, \u2018Oh yeah, he\u2019s up in the clouds all the time.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But McConaughey gives full credit to the ease of transition with performance to Mud<\/em>\u2019s writer\/director Jeff Nichols who \u201cwrote a beautiful script.\u00a0 Fun for McConaughey was that while Mud was \u201ccharacter that would have allowed a lot of improvisation \u2013 a storyteller, a bullshitter.\u00a0 Was he telling the truth?\u00a0 Was he not? \u201d, they stuck close to what Nichols wrote in the script.\u00a0 \u201c[I]t was quite simple.\u00a0 What you see on the screen is exactly what he wrote and exactly what we shot.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t one of those where we shot a bunch of stuff and we\u2019re like, \u2018Where\u2019s that scene?\u2019\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s what we shot.\u00a0 There are maybe one or two scenes that aren\u2019t in there, but he really put together a beautiful film.\u201d<\/p>\n

But one outstanding performance a year isn\u2019t enough when it comes to Matthew McConaughey and as his next award-winning 2013 turn, he put balls to the wall with an electrifying performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>.\u00a0 Already garnering multiple critics awards and a hot contender for Oscar gold for this performance, McConaughey has both a Golden Globes and Film Independent Spirit Award nomination under his belt for his turn as a heterosexual man diagnosed with advanced AIDS at the beginning of HIV research, in a time when AIDS was a dirty word and killing thousands by the day.<\/p>\n

\"dbc\"<\/p>\n

Describing Dallas Buyers Club <\/em>as a film \u201cto follow this one man\u2019s life. . .what\u2019s original is that you\u2019ve got a heterosexual man.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t seen that story from that guy\u2019s point of view.\u00a0 And, he doesn\u2019t start off as this crusader for the cause.\u00a0 He\u2019s not waving the flag.\u00a0 If anything, he\u2019s a selfish son of a bitch who\u2019s doing what he can to survive.\u00a0 And also, it\u2019s the fact that it came out at the inception of HIV.\u00a0 Nobody knew what the heck this thing was.\u00a0 The doctors didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 It was all a brand new frontier.\u00a0 So, here\u2019s this two-bit cowboy electrician with a 7th grade education who becomes an expert, basically a scientist, on how to extend your life in a healthy way [living] with HIV.\u00a0 And he was finding it out.\u00a0 It was the cusp.\u00a0 There was nothing to go off of.\u00a0 He just didn\u2019t like what they were prescribing here, so he said, \u2018I\u2019m leaving the country.\u00a0 I\u2019m going around the world.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to figure out how to survive.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Written by Craig Borten, director Jean-Marc Vallee and McConaughey took the story and the character of Woodroof ever deeper.\u00a0 \u201cJean-Marc and I were real secure on what this story was and that allowed us still to come up with scenes.\u00a0 He added scenes.\u00a0 I added scenes.\u00a0 We added dialogue.\u00a0 We improvised.\u00a0 But we knew what movie we wanted to make.\u00a0 We were making the same movie, and we had to trust each other because there wasn\u2019t time to go, \u2018I\u2019m not sure.\u00a0 Are we doing this right?\u2019\u00a0 You couldn\u2019t be precious about it.\u201d\u00a0 For McConaughey, that meant a lot of personal research.\u00a0 \u201cI found out so much information about the guy when I went and met his family that I was always coming into scenes loaded with different things that Ron would do and how he spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Key to finding that voice were Woodroof\u2019s personal diaries, research and audio interviews which his family gave to McConaughey.\u00a0 \u201cIt was like a Pandora\u2019s box.\u00a0 I had all the interviews.\u00a0 I had the research that you see from the outside in.\u00a0 You see, I had him, not just his words, but him on tape.\u00a0 And that was very informative. . . When I got his diary, I got his monologue.\u00a0 And that\u2019s where I learned if you get the monologue to the man, then you can have the dialogue so to speak. . . When [the Woodroof family] gave me his diary, I saw who the guy was on Monday morning with his pager on, charged, an electrician, organized, waiting for the call that never came.\u00a0 I knew who the guy was on Saturday night getting high with himself, doodling in his book, writing poems and really blasphemous jokes, and actually wondering, \u2018What\u2019s with this life?\u00a0 I kind of want to get out of here.\u2019\u00a0 You\u2019d see what he\u2019d wear.\u00a0 I was like, \u2018Is this Halloween?\u00a0 He\u2019s dressed up like a gangster.\u2019\u00a0 And they\u2019d say, \u2018No.\u00a0 That was just one Tuesday.\u2019\u00a0 And he loved these 30\u2019s jazz bands and stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Challenging, however, was finding the right balance for Woodroof.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cRon was just such a feverish son of a bitch.\u00a0 He was just attacking at all times.\u00a0 He was like a rabid dog.\u201d\u00a0 Promising that his performance \u201cwas true to Ron\u201d, for McConaughey, it all came down to trust,\u00a0 trusting that if they kept the character true to the man, \u201cthis sort of bastard would want to make money, would want to be Scarface\u201d, trust that \u201cif we keep him doing that, his humanity will come out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
