{"id":9363,"date":"2014-11-01T12:15:06","date_gmt":"2014-11-01T19:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=9363"},"modified":"2014-11-09T09:59:44","modified_gmt":"2014-11-09T17:59:44","slug":"horns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/horns\/","title":{"rendered":"HORNS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some guys just have a thing for snakes and it seems that our favorite parseltongue speaking Daniel Radcliffe is no different.\u00a0 In his new film, the devilishly delicious HORNS from director Alexandre Aja, Radcliffe flexes his serpentine skills yet again, this time as the young Ig Perrish.\u00a0 A supernatural thriller that in almost genre-bending fashion, melds the battle of good versus evil with tines of fantasy, romance, a noirish murder mystery and even a little gothic flair.\u00a0 This\u00a0 decadent delight is a multi-pronged, interwoven tapestry of Biblical allegory that pushes the boundaries to almost sacrilegious silliness, but then artfully reins itself in with the strength of performances, indelible visuals and pure unadulterated fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-with-snake.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9376\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-with-snake-400x264.jpg\" alt=\"Horns - with snake\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-with-snake-400x264.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-with-snake-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-with-snake.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ig Perrish and Merrin Williams are heaven sent.\u00a0 Friends since childhood, smitten with each other almost as long, and passionately in love since forever, they are pure joy, ethereal joy.\u00a0 But just as Ig proposes marriage to Merrin, all hell breaks loose.\u00a0 Merrin not only rejects him, but dumps him.\u00a0 Hurt, angry and confused, Ig drinks himself into a drunken stupor only to awaken the next morning to learn that Merrin was found dead at the base of their idyllic treehouse in the forest.\u00a0 Ig is the number one suspect.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turns against him.\u00a0 The town, his friends, his family; all but for his best friend Lee who is now a public defender and representing Ig.\u00a0 But the pressure is too much.\u00a0 Having long ago turned away from religion despite his mother\u2019s strong faith and weekly Sunday attendance in church, he rejects ideas to pray for help and guidance.\u00a0 Next morning, again with a violent hangover, Ig wakes up to find horns growing out of his head.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9377\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-5-400x225.jpg\" alt=\"horns - 5\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-5-400x225.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-5-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-5.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As if not shunned and looked down upon enough already, Ig is desperate to have them removed.\u00a0 But when he goes to the doctor, the doctor doesn\u2019t see the horns.\u00a0 In fact, no one does.\u00a0 Is Ig crazy or is everyone else?\u00a0 But then a strange thing happens, people start to confess things to Ig and tell him the absolute truth, but then never remember doing it.\u00a0 Ig soon realizes the power he now has and determines to use it to find the person who did murder Merrin.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t take long before he\u2019s carrying a pitchfork and commanding all variety of snakes while seeking vengeance on all.<\/p>\n<p>Has Ig sold his soul to the Devil or is he the Devil incarnate?\u00a0 Or is there now a divine plan in motion which he is too blind to see?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Radcliffe is the perfect person to play Ig Perrish.\u00a0 Choosing to embrace Radcliffe\u2019s globally recognized wizarding past, director Aja himself saw the irony &#8211; and humor &#8211; of Radcliffe coming back into a magic and the supernatural, while also recognizing the depth of emotion that Radcliffe now brings to his adult performances. While one may think Radcliffe wouldn\u2019t be too keen to jump back into a magical world, the allegory of Joe Hill\u2019s novel and Keith Bunin\u2019s adapted screenplay proved irresistible.\u00a0\u00a0 With exuberant excitement, Radcliffe extolls the beauty of the written word.\u00a0 \u201cJoe\u2019s world, in and of itself, is so striking and real and exciting that there was never a moment that I was thinking &#8211; and of course, because Potter was such a part of my life &#8211;\u00a0 I never think of the comparisons that other people might make or similarities that might be drawn.\u00a0 The thing that attracted me to [HORNS] was the fact that it was so bold and so heartbreaking and beautiful.\u00a0 And this guy\u2019s journey was something I really connected to.\u00a0 I feel like the allegory of turning into what you are perceived as or feeling like an outsider or being made to feel like an outsider is very strong and something that I, and hopefully a lot of people, can connect to.\u00a0 There was, as you said, such delight in bringing from style to genre.\u00a0 It was so witty at the same time as being dark and the love story obviously, so poignant.\u00a0 There was so much going on that it was exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9387\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"horns - print 2\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2-1400x931.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>DANIEL RADCLIFFE talks HORNS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-9363-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/wav\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-Clip-One.wav?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-Clip-One.wav\">http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horns-Clip-One.wav<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Ig, Radcliffe\u2019s excitement is carried into his performance as he is intense, strong, emotionally powerful.\u00a0 You feel Ig\u2019s quiet rage and frustration and pain emanate from the screen.\u00a0 The fury, and the calm, are palpable and believable.\u00a0\u00a0 Radcliffe brings a maturity to the role feels right, rings true.\u00a0 Your heart bleeds for Ig in certain scenes where he is being pursued by the media and paparazzi trying to sensationalize accusations of murder.\u00a0 One can\u2019t help but connect to the media frenzy that has long surrounded the actor himself, something again, that Alex Aja saw as an added layer to the story.\u00a0 Radcliffe knows how to convey pain and frustration and angst and nails it here.\u00a0\u00a0 We&#8217;ve watched him in fantasy and magic his entire life so it&#8217;s natural to accept him now as the man who grows horns.\u00a0 It feels right with him as Ig.\u00a0\u00a0 Exceptional is his performance in the third act as truths are revealed and Ig has a rising lust for vengeance which takes on visual connotations through the commanding of hundreds of serpents.\u00a0 Radcliffe slides into that aspect of the character like butter melting on the hot coals of hell.\u00a0 Smoooooth&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9379\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-1-400x223.jpg\" alt=\"horns - print 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-1-400x223.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-1-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-1.jpg 613w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Juno Temple is an elfin angel.\u00a0 As Merrin, her spirit floats, her smile is infectious and sweet, yet Temple acknowledges, \u201cso much of that is my cinematographer.\u201d\u00a0 While cinematographer Frederick Elmes does lens Temple with an ethereal essence and light, it is the purity of emotion that comes from within Temple herself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>JUNO TEMPLE talks about becoming &#8220;Merrin&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-9363-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/wav\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Two.wav?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Two.wav\">http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Two.wav<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Supporting cast are outstanding, starting with Kathleen Quinlan who is ideal as Ig\u2019s mom, Lydia.\u00a0 Naturally presenting with a calm, maternal vibe, Quinlan goes for broke and turns a dime with comedic perfection when Lydia is made powerless by Ig\u2019s horns and speaks the truth about her life, her sons.\u00a0 Quinlan is rapier with hilarity and dialogue delivery.\u00a0 According to Quinlan, \u201cIt was a joy to play Daniel\u2019s [Ig\u2019s] mother.\u00a0 He\u2019s such a good boy.\u00a0 I relished the chance to \u2018go for it.\u2019\u201d David Morse walks a fine line as bereft and angry father, Dale Williams, while bringing an emotional shift that keeps the audience on tenterhooks as to which way his emotion will swing.\u00a0 Solid, strong, always with conviction, poignantly beautiful is an exchange between Morse and Radcliffe that puts a lump in the throat just watching.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9380\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe-400x230.jpg\" alt=\"horns - joe anderson &amp; radcliffe\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe-400x230.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe-350x200.jpg 350w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-joe-anderson-radcliffe.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joe Anderson is quite simply a kick in the ass as Ig\u2019s brother, Terry, and never more so that in a supremely decadent hallucinogenic drug-ingesting scene between he and Radcliffe.\u00a0 Anderson pushes the boundaries of the character to new limits in keeping with the tone of the story and the film as a whole.\u00a0 Interesting performance comes from Max Minghella who, as Ig\u2019s best friend and attorney Lee, bodes an aura of untrustworthiness which thankfully we see come to fruition with resolution and explanation why one feels uneasiness with his character throughout the film.\u00a0 Nice turn by Minghella.\u00a0 Heather Graham is ideal as the red-lipsticked, red-polished, red-shoed waitress Veronica.\u00a0 The perfect temptress.<\/p>\n<p>Alexandre Aja has put together a marvelous package of delicious decadent fun on every level.\u00a0 Written by Keith Bunin based on Joe Hill\u2019s novel, HORNS is structured and written much like a Grimms Fairy Tale.\u00a0\u00a0 The use of the color in the visual aspect of the film and the fantastical nature of the story transport us into a world of just enough fantasy to skew the line with reality &#8211; much like ABC&#8217;s \u201cOnce Upon A Time\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Witty dialogue is a hallmark with double entendre, tongue-in-cheek lines aplenty, e.g., \u201cAre you horny?\u201d.\u00a0 Thanks to director Alex Aja\u2019s visualization and conceptualization of the material, the are initially visually transported into a world and a love that has a magical purity to it, with black comedy kicking in, while grabbing every Biblical touchstone at the disposal of both Hill and Bunin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9381\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-3-400x239.jpg\" alt=\"horns - print 3\" width=\"400\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-3-400x239.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-3-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-3.jpg 873w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frederick Elmes cinematography is beauteous.\u00a0 His use of light, shooting digitally for a polished stylized look is celebratory in Ig and Merrin\u2019s \u201cEden\u201d at the treehouse in the forest, richly textured and warm at Ig&#8217;s parents house, comfortable old school at Mr. Williams house, and cold, stark, callously empty yet textured at the logging waterfront.\u00a0 Elmes makes great use of dutching that helps tonally fuel the fantasy.\u00a0 Lensing plays with close-ups and slo-mo pans in the treehouse that leads to breathtaking result, particularly when framing Juno Temple.\u00a0 Visuals are sumptuous, particularly with the use of red and the particular shade of red used.\u00a0 Just explodes with metaphor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>JUNO TEMPLE on bringing a character to life<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-9363-3\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/wav\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Three.wav?_=3\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Three.wav\">http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Horn-Clip-Three.wav<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And when it comes to fantasy, the make-up and VFX guys DAZZLE, not just with the horns per se, but with a stunning metamorphosis of Ig in the film\u2019s final climactic moment that sums up the entire metaphor of Ig in one scene.\u00a0\u00a0 WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!\u00a0 Those are some HOT effects!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-full-devil.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9382\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-full-devil-393x300.jpg\" alt=\"horns - full devil\" width=\"393\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-full-devil-393x300.jpg 393w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-full-devil-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-full-devil.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One challenge presented to the filmmakers of HORNS was the issue of snakes; hundreds of live snakes are used in the film and believe it or not, despite what images everyone may have about Radcliffe and snakes thanks to \u201cHarry Potter\u201d, even he was unsure whether or not he was comfortable with snakes and if he could work with them.\u00a0 It turns out he is and he can!\u00a0 \u201cThey were fantastic. . . It turns out I\u2019m extremely comfortable with snakes.\u00a0 I may have been completely projecting human emotions onto this creature [a highly profiled python], but I became completely convinced that she is very affectionate. . .We had one scene with 100 live snakes, which was awesome!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-5.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7D3kXFG0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9383\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/horns-print-5-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"horns -
