{"id":9385,"date":"2010-08-09T03:09:51","date_gmt":"2010-08-09T10:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=9385"},"modified":"2014-11-01T12:18:28","modified_gmt":"2014-11-01T19:18:28","slug":"astro-boy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/astro-boy\/","title":{"rendered":"ASTRO BOY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9403\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/AstroBoyPoster-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"AstroBoyPoster\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/AstroBoyPoster-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/AstroBoyPoster.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/>In addition to my love and mesmerization with movies from small on, a key visual element in my youth was cartoons &#8211; and not just your standard Bugs, Tweety, Taz or Tom &amp; Jerry.\u00a0 No I went full bore along with my brothers for the early Japanese anime complete with dubbed voices.\u00a0 Part and parcel of a 60&#8217;s era Philadelphia tradition, Wee Willie\u2019s Cartoon Corners was the only place to get your afternoon fix of\u00a0 futuristic adventure complete with Speed Racer and my fave, the 1960&#8217;s black &amp; white Osuma Tezuka classic, ASTRO BOY.\u00a0 So ingrained was ASTRO BOY in my youth that the television theme song was even used for a choreography routine in our second grade school play.\u00a0 Already long beloved in Asia, ASTRO BOY had universal appeal with his goodness, adventure and excitement that permeated the 60&#8217;s cartoon culture. After all, how many of you wouldn\u2019t want jet rockets for legs and incredible strength to power through rock walls with just your fist, and still be a darn good friend, although I think we all agree that Astro\u2019s shirtless speedo look wasn\u2019t exactly what we could wear to school.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the 80&#8217;s, ASTRO BOY again appeared, sparking the fantasies of another generation.\u00a0 And of course, as seems the way of the world, another 20 years later in 2003, ASTRO took another stab at American audiences with yet another incarnation.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t until writer\/director David Bowers came along that Astro finally got top honors making his way onto the big screen with 2009&#8217;s ASTRO BOY.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9390\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124914-400x168.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_124914\" width=\"400\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124914-400x168.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124914-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124914.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For those of you not in the know (which surprisingly included most of the voice cast of the film before embarking on this project), Astro Boy began life as little Toby Tenma.\u00a0 Living in the gleaming, glossy, peaceful and clean Metro City high above the Earth below, Toby is the son of the esteemed scientist, Dr. Tenma.\u00a0 Earth now appears to be nothing more than a garbage heap thanks to a lack of \u201cgreen\u201d living and environmental correctness.\u00a0 Robots now work side by side with humans, albeit in service capacities like maids, garbage collectors and blue color laborers.\u00a0 (Think \u201cThe Jetsons\u201d and you\u2019ll know what I mean.)\u00a0\u00a0 And while difficult to believe, Toby, a genius in his own right,\u00a0 does seem to have surpassed dad in the brains department.\u00a0 Unfortunately for Toby, given his dad\u2019s importance in the scientific community and the delicacy and impact of a particular project on wh<\/span>ich Dr. Tenma is working, Toby struggles for his dad\u2019s attention, finding the easy way to gain that is by popping up at Dad\u2019s work, especially on the day of a super secret presentation to the military.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9391\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124928-400x172.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_124928\" width=\"400\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124928-400x172.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124928-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124928.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Absorbed in his work and oblivious to his son, Dr. Tenma gushes with enthusiasm over his findings involving Blue Core and Red Core energies.\u00a0 Blue Core is a power source of positive, pure \u201cblue\u201d energy, while Red Core is the epitome of pure negativity.\u00a0 Falling into the wrong hands, either Core could be mis-used or mismanaged, particularly if the military gets involved.\u00a0\u00a0 But while demonstrating the effects of each and man\u2019s ability to \u201ccontrol\u201d these energy sources, something goes terribly wrong and Toby is killed.\u00a0 Grief-stricken over the loss of his son, Tenma knows what he must do.\u00a0 He has the technology.\u00a0 He has the knowledge.\u00a0 He has the Blue Core.\u00a0 He can \u201cbuild\u201d a robot to look like Toby, programming it not only with the best of human characteristics but with a strength and invincibility that will keep Toby \u201calive\u201d and with him always.\u00a0 With his mentor, Dr. Elefun by his side, Tenma m<\/span>oves forward with his obsession, and with the placement of the Blue Core inside Toby\u2019s robotic chest, life\u2019s purest energy courses through the boy\u2019s veins, bringing Toby back to his father.\u00a0 But is it Toby?\u00a0 He looks like Toby.\u00a0 He acts like Toby.\u00a0 But when push comes to shove, Tenma can\u2019t bring himself to love him because this is nothing more than a robot &#8211; a fact of which \u201cToby\u201d wasn\u2019t told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Cast aside like a worn out pair of shoes, Toby runs, er, or in his case, surprisingly flies away.\u00a0 Quickly realizing that he is not a boy but really a robot, Toby is more confused than ever.\u00a0 Where does he belong?\u00a0 Where does he fit in?\u00a0 But there\u2019s one person that seems to know where Toby fits in.\u00a0 President Stone.\u00a0 A meglomaniacal militaristic leader of Metro City, and up for re-election, Stone knows the secret Toby holds &#8211; the Blue Core.\u00a0 And he wants it.\u00a0 Badly.\u00a0 Badly enough to do whatever it takes to capture and destroy Toby.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9392\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124944-400x170.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_124944\" width=\"400\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124944-400x170.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124944-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_124944.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Soaring away from the claws of Stone and the life he once had, Toby \u201ccrash lands\u201d onto the world below &#8211; Earth.\u00a0 Adopting the moniker of ASTRO BOY, Toby finds what he has longed for &#8211; a home, friends, loyalty and love.\u00a0\u00a0 But his contentment and joy of being a \u201cboy\u201d with a ragamuffin band of other parentless kids is short-lived when his secret of being a robot is exposed.\u00a0 As the clock wind down, Astro\u2019s humanity is put to the test with battles on Earth and President Stone zooming in for the kill.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9393\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125008-400x168.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125008\" width=\"400\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125008-400x168.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125008-300x126.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125008.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ASTRO BOY heral<\/span>ds one of the most impressive voicing casts of the year, starting with Nicholas Cage as Dr. Tenma.\u00a0 He blew me out of the water.\u00a0 The emotion and sensitivity he conveys with tonal inflection propels the character and touches a chord within you.\u00a0\u00a0 And according to David Bowers, \u201cNicholas Cage came on because he was a big ASTRO BOY fan already.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 As for our hero, Bowers looked no further than Freddie Highmore.\u00a0 \u201c Freddie [Highmore] has the weight of the movie on his shoulders.\u00a0 He is one of the best young actors of the day.\u201d\u00a0 Bringing a vulnerability to Astro Boy, Bowers also wanted Highmore for his \u201cintelligence and independence.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Likewise for Astro\u2019s friend Cora, voiced by Kristen Bell who is \u201csuper smart, super intelligent.\u201d\u00a0 So moved by her own character and involved in the performance and story, Bowers noted that \u201cin one of the recording booths [Bell] had tears running down her cheeks for Cora\u2019s scenes with more emotional stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9394\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125026-400x169.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125026\" width=\"400\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125026-400x169.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125026-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125026.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After seeing and hearing Bill Nighy as Dr. Elefun, I can think of no one better for the role.\u00a0 He exudes a grandfatherly love and wisdom, serving as the moral compass of the film.\u00a0\u00a0 But Nighy doesn\u2019t stop with one voice.\u00a0 For Bowers, \u201cI love him as an actor so I\u00a0<\/span>cast him twice in the movie &#8211; as Dr. Elefun and as Robotsky, the big red robot that\u2019s not very bright.\u201d\u00a0 Probably known best as Davy Jones in the \u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d series and soon to be seen as Rufus Scrimgeour, Minister of Magic, in \u201cHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows\u201d, Nighy is no stranger to character voicing thanks to his vast experience in radio theatre.\u00a0 His expertise and enthusiasm are clearly evident. \u201cEverything about the project was attractive.\u00a0 I loved the script. The script is so exemplary.\u00a0 I was happy.\u201d\u00a0 So happy in fact that when Bowers asked him \u201chow would you like to be part of the Robot Revolutionary Front, there was only one answer to that, \u2018Yeah!\u00a0 I\u2019d love to be a member.\u00a0 And I turned out to be Robotsky who is a filing cabinet with a head.\u2019\u00a0 It was good fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9395\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125048-400x169.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125048\" width=\"400\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125048-400x169.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125048-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125048.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As always, Nathan Lane, here as the Faginesque Hammegg, is superb as is Eugene Levy who serves as Orrin, Tenma\u2019s maid.\u00a0 But for me, my money is on Donald\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>David Bowers has a dream team of voice talent.\u00a0 \u201cI made a list of people that I wanted to be in the movie and they all said yes.\u201d\u00a0 And what would make this group of first-choices all say \u201cyes\u201d to ASTRO BOY?\u00a0 The script.\u00a0 \u201cWe sent out a script.\u00a0 We sent out visuals.\u00a0 I talked to them about the role and what kind of movie I was hoping to make.\u201d\u00a0 What Bowers has given us is a great role model with a heart of gold, who is courageous and fiercely loyal to his friends all centering on a story that touches so many issues relevant in the world today.\u00a0 As Highmore notes, \u201cThere\u2019s the affects of the environment, treatment of certain people in society.\u00a0 It\u2019s about Astro Boy trying to fit in after being rejected by his family.\u00a0 And the fact that he\u2019s an individual trying to change the world which people love.\u00a0 But of course, rules and regulations are against him as they are in society today.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Bill Nighy deems this \u201ca very smart script.\u00a0 Animated films are no longer a sub-genre.\u00a0 They are mainstream.\u00a0 There is a meditation on the family and those kind of relationships and how important they are.\u201d\u00a0 For producer Maryann Garger, \u201cWhat makes it fresh is this is something unique and different.\u00a0 It feels like a great change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A long time animator and storyboard artist, Bowers previously made the jump to directing with \u201cShark Tale\u201d and \u201cFlushed Away\u201d but with ASTRO BOY also tackles script and story along with his directing duties, believing that his progression through the filmmaking process over the years \u201chas been very valuable for me because I\u2019ve had the opportunity to work with some really amazing people.\u00a0 You learn from experience as you go along and draw upon what they have to teach you.\u00a0 Hopefully, ASTRO BOY is a culmination of all of that.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9396\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125119-400x171.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125119\" width=\"400\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125119-400x171.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125119-600x257.jpg 600w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125119-300x128.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125119.jpg 601w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sutherland who is outstanding as the evil President Stone. APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE!!!!!!!!\u00a0\u00a0 Love the character.\u00a0 Love Sutherland who brings so much depth and engagement to Stone.\u00a0\u00a0 Samuel L. Jackson even enters the cause in what Bowers describes as a \u201ccameo.\u00a0 He\u2019s very impactful.\u00a0 He\u2019s got such a wonderful voice.\u00a0 I wanted it to make a big impression when he speaks.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9397\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125132-400x169.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125132\" width=\"400\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125132-400x169.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125132-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125132.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With \u201clots of action adventure and lots of spectacle and lots of comedy\u201d that kids will love, as Highmore noted, Bowers also tackles some more emotional dramatic i<\/span>ssues which he believes will be well-received by families due in large part to the fact that \u201csomething terrific in Astro Boy comes out of such a terrible tragedy.\u00a0 It\u2019s really heart warming and uplifting.\u201d\u00a0 Something many adults will undoubtedly pick up on is the less than subtle political subtext of \u201cBlue Core\u201d and \u201cRed Core\u201d\/positive and negative and the fight for their control by President Stone.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9398\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125152-400x166.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125152\" width=\"400\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125152-400x166.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125152-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125152.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, animation is the first thing to note in this film.\u00a0 Within moments, you can\u2019t help but notice Bowers\u2019 striking blend of traditional anime but with a refreshing facelift. \u201cI had an amazing production design team.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want it to look like your average CGI movie.\u00a0 I wanted this to have the Asian feel.\u00a0 So, I studied the works of Naguchi [who designed Metro City] and looked at some images from Hokusai which are very influential in the way the film looks.\u00a0 It has more of an Asian palette.\u201d\u00a0 Differences between Metro City and Earth was deliberately done \u201cto set the two communities apart so you got a sense of Astro going to a very very different world\u201d all of which plays to the psychological as well as visual distinction between man\/emotion and machine. While on Earth, the color palette and detail is much richer and beauteous, a perfect contrast to the machination of Metro City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Surprising is that the animation of this film was essentially complete before the voicing which meant the actors weren\u2019t filmed for expressiveness or mannerisms to be incorporated into the animation, making the voicing even more incredible.\u00a0 The meld between each character\u2019s appearance and the voice behind it is impeccable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-9399\" src=\"http:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125206-400x172.jpg\" alt=\"2009-11-12_125206\" width=\"400\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125206-400x172.jpg 400w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125206-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/2009-11-12_125206.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><br \/>\nIn addition to the story and principals, supporting character creation is also key to the endearment of this film, starting with my favorite, Trash Can.\u00a0 With a nod to R2-D2, for Bowers, a man with a very fertile imagination, \u201cI like animals in a movie.\u00a0 And since this is a robot movie, a robot dog seemed like a really fun idea.\u00a0 Plus, Trash Can is a dog with his own agenda because other robots can tell who the robots are, but Trash Can only speaks in barks.\u00a0 I believe it\u2019s funny to have this character who is constantly trying to tip everyone off to the fact that Astro\u2019s a robot when he\u2019s pretending to be a real kid.\u00a0 And with other characters, like the Robot Revolutionary Front, I just thought they were funny ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Personally, the one glaring hole in the film is the absence of the tv series theme song.\u00a0 However, on whining to Bowers about it, his reasoning for its omission is sound.\u00a0 \u201cI thought about it.\u00a0 If you go back to the 1960&#8217;s theme, it\u2019s really charming, but it really sounds of its time.\u00a0 So I wasn\u2019t keen to include it.
