{"id":9436,"date":"2010-08-08T22:33:43","date_gmt":"2010-08-09T05:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moviesharkdeblore.com\/site\/?p=9436"},"modified":"2014-11-01T12:36:38","modified_gmt":"2014-11-01T19:36:38","slug":"the-beautiful-ordinary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behindthelensonline.net\/site\/reviews\/the-beautiful-ordinary\/","title":{"rendered":"THE BEAUTIFUL ORDINARY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>By: debbie lynn elias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Newcomer director\/writer Jessica Manafort throws her hat into the LA Film Festival with a simply beautiful and ordinary film &#8211; THE\u00a0<\/span>BEAUTIFUL ORDINARY.\u00a0 Proving that some of the most beautiful and memorable experiences in life don\u2019t require high tech special effects, car chases, explosions, pirates, ogres or George Clooney, but rather just a simple straightforward connectable script with likeable characters and a common thread that touches us all, Manafort succeeds with what I consider to be one the frontrunners in the Narrative Competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How many of you remember your last day of school before summer vacation?\u00a0 I remember them all.\u00a0 Some were good.\u00a0 Some were bad.\u00a0 But no matter what, all were memorable.\u00a0 And I would pretty much bet my condo that most of you remember yours, too; whether you will admit to it or not is another story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s the last day of school for summer 1999.\u00a0 Y2K hasn\u2019t arrived.\u00a0 We are in a pre-terrorist United States.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 High school students only have a few ordinary things to think about &#8211; friends, dating, partying, okay a few think about college and grades, and having fun.\u00a0 And the students of Wilmington, North Carolina High School (which could be in suburban Anytown, USA) are no different as they look ahead to the future.\u00a0\u00a0 For some, it\u2019s simply summer vacation.\u00a0 For others, it\u2019s next year as a Freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.\u00a0 For others, its college.\u00a0 And still for others, they have no clue.\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone\u2019s future has yet to be written, but what they all have in common is partying on the first night of summer vacation, even though all of them are underage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The cliques, couples and personalities are identified from the get-go.\u00a0 Stacey Cherry is an obsessive compulsive cheerleader with a \u201cSaved by the Bell\u201d Jessie Spano smile and Kelly Kapowski over-flowing personality.\u00a0\u00a0 Her slacker homey boyfriend Dillon lives in her basement unbeknownst to her mother and despite warnings from her friends that he treats her badly and she should dump him, she won\u2019t without a \u201cgood reason.\u201d\u00a0 Her only priorities for the day are her pep rally that they trained \u201creally, really, really, really hard for\u201d, and having a beer and getting wasted at a party later in the night.\u00a0\u00a0 Her best friend Julia isn\u2019t sure of anything except partying while her sometimes boyfriend Pete is upset over flunking 2 classes so he doesn\u2019t get to graduate.\u00a0\u00a0 Our illustrious stoner dudes, Felix and Mod, are of course worried about only one thing.\u00a0\u00a0 Need I say more about them?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Holly just graduated middle school and is in oh such a rush to grow up and be a high schooler.\u00a0\u00a0 Biz and Eddie and their friends are the local homeboys who really come across more as wannabe homeys, especially Eddie who has such respect for his female friends it\u2019s heartwarming.\u00a0\u00a0 Brianne and Dawn have been \u201cBFF for a gizillion years.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thomas, a very quiet reserved Asian student, says nothing but photographs everything.\u00a0\u00a0 And of course, we\u2019ve got a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Starting at daybreak, we get to see the ebb and flow of the high school dynamic.\u00a0 This is a typical day in the life of a high school aged teen.\u00a0 Some are cutting class.\u00a0 All are driving around looking for the night\u2019s hot party.\u00a0 Some want to hook-up.\u00a0 Some want to break-up.\u00a0 The camera follows them all and we see it all. The fun.\u00a0 The sadness.\u00a0 The goofiness.\u00a0 The bad behavior.\u00a0 But through it all &#8211; pure unadulterated joy.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got multiple parties happening.\u00a0 Some planned with guests.\u00a0 Others not planned but word of mouth invites solve that problems.\u00a0 There\u2019s even a \u201cSharks v. Jets\u201d rumble at a keg party on the athletic fields.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Most touching is when the lights go down and the groups go their separate ways, we see what each really is inside.\u00a0 The facades are dropped and the heart and soul of these young people are exposed for all to see.\u00a0 Very plain, very ordinary, but all very special in their own unique way.\u00a0\u00a0 There are some of these friendships that you know won\u2019t last, but others, well, they will be BFF (Best Friends Forever for those not in the know).\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There\u2019s not a character in here that won\u2019t remind you of someone you know or knew.\u00a0 Someone that made your days at high school, or even that very last day before summer, something more than ordinary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The cast, while almost unknown but with a few recognizable faces, is exemplary. Marnette Patterson as cheerleader Stacey Cherry is a joy to watch, particularly in light of her prior works and the antithesis of Stacey to anything else she has done.\u00a0 I have admired her work for some time thanks to her performance as the dislikable evil witch \u201cKristy\u201d on \u201cCharmed\u201d, not to mention a turn in last year\u2019s Atlanta Film Festival winner \u201cPope Dreams\u201d and an appearance on \u201cCSI\u201d.\u00a0 She always brings a new level, a new edge to her performance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I am thrilled to see Lyndsy Fonseca so prominently featured as Dawn. I caught her in &#8220;How I Met Your Mother&#8221; and &#8220;CSI&#8221; and I have always thought she had such screen presence and so much potential. And Alexa Vega&#8230;..soooo nice to see her transition from &#8220;Spy Kids&#8221; to a more mature &#8220;adult&#8221; teen\u00a0 role.\u00a0 But even cast as junior high graduate Holly who just can\u2019t wait to be a mature high school student, she still retains the sweetness, charm and likeability we have all come to know and love from \u201cSpy Kids.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Brothers Chris and Sean Marquette are perfect as stoner brothers Felix and Mod and with their performances, there is no doubt that they really are brothers.\u00a0\u00a0 A long time sitcom fave of mine is Wesley Jonathan and here as homeboy Biz is as enjoyable as ever.\u00a0 Melonie Diaz as Brianne is especially impressive and has the strength of personality I\u2019ve seen in Kimberley Elise.\u00a0\u00a0 Notable is newcomer Charles Chen as the tacit photographer Thomas.\u00a0 And familiar faces like Brie Larson and Amber Heard, and others too numerous to mention, all add dimension and warmth to the story.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I have to give Manafort big kudos for including her long time friends, the band Over It, as the high school punk rockers.\u00a0\u00a0 Looks like they be BFF themselves.\u00a0 An enjoyable little cameo comes from Moira Kelly who now plays a frustrated mother.\u00a0 Best known as the bitchy ice princess Kate Moseley in \u201cThe Cutting Edge\u201d, it was a pleasant surprise to see her face pop in to view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As writer and director, Jessica Manafort knows her material.\u00a0 Born and bred in Alexandria, Virginia, Manafort was 17 in 1999.\u00a0 This script, this story is from her heart.\u00a0 This is from\u00a0 experience.\u00a0 Great care is paid to the individual characters and personalities, allowing each to unfold very naturally resulting in well-rounded personas and very eclectic mix.\u00a0\u00a0 These are ordinary people that you and I both knew in high school.\u00a0 The dialogue is as if lifted from Manafort\u2019s own last day of school.\u00a0 It is refreshing, conversational and believable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lensing in Wilmington, North Carolina, the location is nondescript and beautiful.\u00a0 Lush greenery.\u00a0 Homes of brick, shingles, big ones and little ones.\u00a0 No curbs.\u00a0 Some neatly manicured lawns and some not so neat.\u00a0 The neighborhoods have personality.\u00a0 Lived in feelings.\u00a0 A comfortable, ordinary place that lends itself well to the 35mm shoot.\u00a0 The camerawork is simple and easy.\u00a0 Nothing fancy.\u00a0 No convoluted edits.\u00a0 And especially commendable is the attention to the smaller details.\u00a0 The accuracy of the party scenes.\u00a0 The paint color on the walls and the lighting that captures the warmth of friendships and adds a soft glow to happy, smiling faces. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Simple, understated, sweet, honest and nostalgic.\u00a0\u00a0 A slice of Americana.\u00a0 A slice of each of our lives.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There is nothing ordinary about THE BEAUTIFUL ORDINARY.\u00a0\u00a0 Moments like these only come around once.\u00a0 Thanks to Jessica Manafort, we get to live our own beautiful and ordinary life one more time.\u00a0 Everything ordinary should always be this beautiful.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">THE BEAUTIFUL ORDINARY is screening Friday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Landmark\u2019s Regent; Tuesday, June 26 at 5:00 p.m. at The Landmark; and Wednesday, June 27 at 10:00 p.m. at The Landmark.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By: debbie lynn elias Newcomer director\/writer Jessica Manafort throws her hat into the LA Film Festival with a simply beautiful and ordinary film &#8211; THE\u00a0BEAUTIFUL ORDINARY.\u00a0 Proving that some of the most beautiful and memorable experiences in life don\u2019t require high tech special effects, car chases, explosions, pirates, ogres or George Clooney, but rather just [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":9439,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[36,9],"tags":[1423],"class_list":["post-9436","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-movies","category-reviews","tag-the-beautiful-ordinary"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.5 (Yoast SEO v27.5) -
