Craftsmanship proves more memorable than the story in A PRAYER FOR THE DYING, and therein lies the paradox – a film about a dying world whose most extraordinary achievement is how vividly alive its filmmaking becomes.
What ultimately makes THE CYCLE so effective is the remarkable unity of its creative elements. The screenplay, performances, cinematography, production design, editing, sound, score, and practical effects aren’t competing for attention. For writer/director/editor Alex Goyette, the seeds of his deliciously disturbing thriller BREEDER were planted by two decidedly bizarre real-life experiences: an unexpected interrogation about his genetic history and an encounter with a dog breeder whose obsession with controlling her animals took a frightening turn.
