On February 5, 2020, we lost one of the greatest luminaries the silver screen, and the world, has ever known with the passing of KIRK DOUGLAS. A legend. An icon. There will never be another like him in this or any other lifetime.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will celebrate the life and career of seminal actor Kirk Douglas with a 24-hour programming tribute on Thursday, March 5 as well as a special screening of Spartacus (1960) at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood in April. Douglas, who passed away on Feb. 5 at the age of 103, was known for his iconic work in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Acting in more than 80 movies before he retired in 2004, Douglas was recognized for breaking the Hollywood Blacklist by hiring Dalton Trumbo to write his film Spartacus (1960). He earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Actor for Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Lust for Life (1956) and received an Honorary Award in 1995. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States, by President Jimmy Carter in 1981.
The 2020 TCM Classic Film Festival will also feature a screening of Spartacus (1960) in honor of Douglas and the 60th anniversary of his groundbreaking film. This will be presented in the world premiere of a new 70mm print from a 4K restoration by Universal Pictures.
