BTL Radio Show – 10/12/2026 with director & editor DAVID FERINO discussing ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES: ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE

As promised, we’ve got a fun BEHIND THE LENS this week as we explore ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES: ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE with director and editor DAVID FERINO.

How many of you have seen any of the ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES movies over the last 50 years?  How about the animated series?  If you have, then you are probably one of those, like me, who is more than excited over this long-awaited fifth installment in one of cult cinema’s most enduring horror-comedy franchises.  If you haven’t seen any of the TOMATOES films, then you need to start scrolling and streaming right now because they are each a kick in the ass with campy comedic fun with a deliberately outrageous mixture of horror, comedy and social satire.

MONDO FABULOCITY is the best way to describe the gloriously ridiculous, outrageously funny, camp-filled cinematic insanity that is ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES: ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE! And yes, “Mondo Fabulocity” is actually a line in the film. One that perfectly encapsulates every deliciously absurd minute of this fifth installment in the beloved cult franchise. The tomatoes are back, they’re bigger, badder, and smarter than ever, and they’re ready to ketchup with the times!

Almost 50 years after the original ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES first rolled into theaters in 1978, original creators and screenwriters Costa Dillon and J. Stephen Peace are back – as they have been with each film and the animated series –  with a script that is nothing short of comedic genius. Puns, parody, satire, pop culture references, visual gags, and one-liners come flying faster than tomatoes in a food fight. And under the direction of David Ferino, the result is a wildly entertaining celebration of everything that made the original film a cult classic while giving us something fresh, contemporary, and delightfully deranged.

At the heart of ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE is Kate Patelle, a young biotech prodigy whose genetically engineered vegetable promises to solve humanity’s problems. Naturally, things don’t go quite according to plan. After all, when you’re tinkering with Mother Nature, particularly when tomatoes are involved, you should probably expect a few murderous consequences. And from there, all bets are off as genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, environmental concerns, global warming, politics, and the general absurdity of the human condition become fertile ground for comedy.

Dillon and Peace haven’t merely dusted off their original concept and slapped a contemporary coat of paint on it. They’ve embraced the absurdities of modern life and woven them into the very fabric of the franchise. Artificial intelligence? Check. Genetic engineering? Check. Government bureaucracy? Check. Environmental anxiety? Check. And then there’s the Federal Vegetable Investigations, or FVI, because apparently even homicidal produce requires its own government investigative agency.

The dialogue is a veritable buffet of comedic delights. References to Bikini Bottom, Ariel’s Grotto, Tom Cruise’s Maverick, and the immortal notion that “nature will find a way” are scattered throughout, rewarding viewers who catch the references while never slowing down the story for those who don’t. There’s even a tomato murder board that is worth the price of admission all by itself!

It’s farce. It’s parody. It’s satire. It’s fan service. It’s pure ridiculum! And it is FUNNY!

The cast is fantastic featuring veteran comedic gold from Eric Roberts, Vernee Watson (listen up all you General Hospital fans!), David Koechner, Dan Bakkedahl, Paul Bates, and returning once again as the voice of Professor Gangreen, John Astin.  And then there are a slew of new faces joining them, including Samantha Bailey, Noor Razooky, Zachary Roozen and Myrna Velasco.

As you’re about to hear, in this exclusive conversation with director and editor David Ferino, he discusses his experience helming ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE, explaining how he secured the role through a producer connection and worked closely with franchise creators Costa Dillon and Stephen Peace to preserve the series’ legacy.  David also details technical aspects such as working with his DP Patrick Russo and maintaining a bright, cinematic color palette inspired by “Deadpool & Wolverine” and using animation for opening titles – a sequence that is too die for hilarious – as well as his editing process. He also lovingly touches on casting veterans like Eric Roberts and John Astin alongside new talent. And with this only his second feature, David looks ahead to what he can bring to the table in the future thanks to this film, emphasizing the importance of having a skilled crew to execute a film that balances escapist comedy with subtle societal themes.  And will there be another ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES???  Listen and maybe you’ll find out.

So, keep those vegetable crispers tightly closed and take a listen as director and editor DAVID FERINO talks all things ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES: ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE.

And you can enjoy all the hilarity and fun right now from the comfort of your home as ORGANIC INTELLIGENCE is streaming on Prime Video, AppleTV, YouTube, Google Play, as well as being available on multiple cable providers.
